Log Planter

This summer I attempted to make a planter out of a log leftover from a neighbors tree removal. My original idea was to cut / drill the inside of the log out and plant something in the middle.
Ya, well 3 hours later all I managed to drill out were 2 small holes. I ended up deciding just to plant small plants in the log this summer and try again next spring when the elements has a chance to weaken the log guts a little.
HELP | Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to drill out the inside of a tree trunk?
After 3 hours (about 1/2 through I started using a jack hammer drill. I think that is what it's called.
The second, bigger log will just be used as a plant stand for colorful seasonal pots
The Hosta and Vinca are planted in my 2 small holes. I am not sure how well they will winter over.
I love the rustic, earthy look of the logs in the garden.
I do love that I can use the tall log as a pedestal to display things for the different seasons. I placed a pumpkin on it for Halloween / Thanksgiving

I had a HUGE Pepper Tree (over 75 years old) in CA that had a stump right under it from an old cutting. It was about 25" in diameter x 30" tall and I planted a fern in it once I chipped out enough from the center of the stump to allow for soil. I used a sharp woodworkers awl (?) chisel (?) with a hammer. Took me about 1/2 a day, but the wood was softish with some bug damage. The final look was great and the shade from the pepper tree was perfect for the fern. Keep going and you will love your results!
