Daughter replaced her sliders with 2 sets of bi-fold doors with the slats on top portion for ventilation.

We just bought a house [circa 1960's], both Bi-Fold doors [ over 8 ft tall keep fallling off their tracks [ they are old ] we are looking for a new door system and track or another option. If we can not find anything we like, THANK GOD my hubby is handy, he is looking in to many diff. options and if he does not find what he wants, once his workshop is built in March he will make his own doors.
  • Barn door(s), French style door, bi-folds - numerous ways to do it depending on look, room available, etc... @Kelly B you might try a company like Johnson Hardware that sells heavy duty hardware

I have bar swinging doors for my bedroom entrance.( no room for a regular door). They have been up for 20 years and I have had no problems. I stained and varnished ours. They come in various lengths.

Do NOT do bi fold doors..... I have tried them and the are the bain of my life. I would rather frame my opeing and put any kind of REAL doors on them.... even if I need five!!! If you have the space on each or either side......... I would go for a barn door.

I saw a really cool idea with bifold doors you can make them into french doors you would need to divide them in half then make them into two solid panels and replace one set of door hinges and a center magnet catch have it posted on my Pinterest board under doors my Pinterest name is Ladeda much better instructions there very easy to do

You didn't mention the width of your closet. Was thinking about those deco screens that are hinged so they are freestanding. Maybe you could attach one end to the closet frame and fold them back on one another?

You could put a decorative accordion style privacy screen in the track used for the old door. That way when closed it would be a nice design and you can still open it all the way to either side of the opening. Make the screen as wide as the door since they are adjustable. Happy DIY'ing!

You could always NOT add doors back on. I'm trying to turn my daughter's closet into a "storage-type" closet; one part at a time. That way we also get to eliminate her dresser and end table...more room in her small bedroom. So far we have a stack of white wire shelving with drawers plus a couple of white racks we screwed into the wall. We still need more. Our next purchase will be the white steel rod; to hang her clothes on. Good luck. If you have the $$ you could complete it in a day; easy.

Oh...I'd also put up some sort of nice colored curtains that add a bit of zest to the room...to keep the dust out of the closet.

I took my bifold doors off and hung beautiful curtains from a rod I hung close to the ceiling on the outside of the closet. I used ring clips so I could easily open and close them. I have access to the closet that I wouldn't have with doors and it looks so much nicer, too!

Others have suggested the curtain solution and I'm leaning in that direction . I love fabrics and color. Thanks

I thought about the curtain trick but when going to fix and sell a house, people are not happy with it.... So I will keep on searching see what else is out there besides bi-fold doors.

It wouldn't hurt to keep your old sliding doors (in garage or something) just in case you do sell and want to put them back prior to the sale...or the potential owners might quite like your idea and leave it as is...or the doors can be left available for the new owners to put on should they wish.

@Crystal The doors are literally from 1960 when the house was built - we couldn't even repair them - they literally fell aparat and that is why they need replacing.. As you tried to slide them off the trackS they came and where they were screwed together [ to make the door shape literally fell apart.. ] and they were old, metal, hollow.. Ourbig problem now is all the doors we find stop at 80 INCHES tall, our opening is 94 INCHES tall.. As Bill said yesterday he either will have to ""PAD OUT"" to top or bottom to make the new dooors fit if that is what he decides to do..

Have you checked out any local auctions?? If you find a good one, you'll probably find what you want after a few times of going. Hang in there. Good luck. An auction would also be a nice "outing" for yourself and your husband. It took myself and my husband a few times of going before "the bug bit". Now we pay next to nothing no matter what we want (by going to auctions). Forget about retail prices.
