You can find ideas for removing popcorn ceilings on HomeTalk. You can also find more DIYs on Pinterest. I hope this helps!

Painting a popcorn ceiling will make it far more difficult to remove if you decide to in the future.

I have scraped our kitchen and dining room only to find they were sprayed onto some type of wood. I wish it was ship lap but it is far from it. Further investigation revealed a piece mealed ceiling. So, I started off painting my laundry ceiling. The first coat is the hardest as it soaked in pretty quick and I learned to NOT roll it too much as the popcorn would become too wet and start coming off. It can be done, I did it. And I will continue in each room through out. As paint is much cheaper than drywall ing the entire house or applying true ship lap. But we are going to use real wood planks for the kitchen and dining rooms.
  • Sol, do you merely want to paint them, or do you want to remove the popcorn and have smooth painted ceilings?

    • If the popcorn texture is adhered well and not coming off you can roll the ceilings with a long nap standard paint roller. There is always some risk that the texture will start coming off. A better way, depending on how much you have is to rent an airless paint sprayer and spray it in 2 or 3 light coats. Good luck!

First, depending on the age of your home, make sure your not dealing with asbestos. My painters shared In our area, it was used at one time.

If they have not been painted again, and again then you can remove the texture by wetting the stuff and scraping it off. FYI it will make a mess. We have done it in the past. If the popcorn has been painted a few times, the only thing I have found it to texture over it using a different technique that would flatten the look. That may require hiring someone, though.

Use a roller with deep nap. The paint store man can show you.

If you are just painting them... check for stains and use kilz to cover them. If no stains, do your cutting in first and then roll the remainder.

Many years ago my brother and I painted his popcorn ceiling. I don't know what he used but one room took five coats and some of the popcorn fell off due to all that weight. It was a mess so do your research first!

@Sol Chalker - When popcorn ceilings are sprayed it is generally done with latex ceiling paint added because the latex paint can be watered down, so if you want to paint your ceiling you will have to first prime it using oil primer. Oil primer will seal the popcorn so that you won't have to deal with the "popcorn" falling off in chunks. After you prime the ceiling you can then proceed and paint with latex ceiling paint. (yes it is OK to paint latex paint over oil primer)

A thick Sponge Roller should do it. Use normal strokes, do not use a lot of pressure!

Never roll farword and then pull your roller backwards as it will pull it off . Roll one way and after that dries then roll the other way ( Carefully ) . Good luck .
