Remove the mosaic? Paint? It needs H-E-L-P!!!

Mosiac has to go, too busy. Stove is keeper. Cabinets need painting (white) with wall a color to set them off (taupe, pale yellow?). Shelving unit on rt. can be a fun color...maybe a cranberry red? Shelving over range hood can hold fun things...a red and white rooster? Once the mosaic is gone and cabinets painted, hardware replaced the rest will flow. Some prefab countertop from Lowe's would work nicely and if walls were lt. taupe, they would complement a prefab countertop that was dark and mimicked granite. Can this kitchen handle an island?Remember the 60-20-10% principle...Cabinets 60% of color, countertop and stove 20% and accents 10% (a cranberry red cabinet? Wall color is pallet. Dark countertop would compliment the black stove.

Definitely get rid of the mosaic. I personally like the color of the cabinets, so I would just update the handles. What ever type back splash you choose I would continue it between the shelves over the stove. Not unless you plan to put a slim line stainless steel microwave there, then I wouldn't worry about it. Think once the counter and back splash is replaced it will be the kitchen you so desire.

I think it's going to take more than removing mosaic. The cabinets look washed out and weary. How abt a taupe shade for them just a little darker than the wall if you do it taupe. Then you can switch out fun accessories with color. Some greenery in that space over range and maybe even a low wattage soft light behind it...looks like there is an outlet there!

I'm a big fan of white cabinets. Ditch the mosaic - go with white subway tile backsplash, black countertops, black knobs.....

Hi Tami! Sad to say that the mosaic really needs to go. Which is going to be quite an undertaking from what I can see! I actually like the detail in those cabinets. Perhaps try painting them a soft white, then switching the handles for something a bit more modern to complement the stove? Ikea has some really sleek ones, like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60138759/ Other than that, the sky is the limit based on what else is in the room and the adjacent rooms in terms of wall colors and furnishings.

It really does have to go. Even paint couldn't hide the hideous shapes . . . :( I say go all white . . . replace it with a marble counter and subway tile backsplash OR I saw an awesome kitchen re-do where my friend did vintage metal tile for a backsplash. Cabinets would look cool all white or whitewashed. Do NOT do granite counter tops . . . so outdated now!

IT HAS TO GO! I would paint the bottom cabinets a soft gray and the uppers a creamy white. I would change the hinges to European hinges (the ones hidden inside the cabinet) and update the hardware.

Like everyone else, I say the countertop and backsplash have to go. Very dated and not in good shape. Once that goes, your kitchen is pretty much a clean slate and you can go in several directions. New paint and hardware will save those cabinets and the flooring is OK. You might look into doing a soapstone counter. It goes with white or the natural cabinets.

I, too, would replace the mosaic backsplash and countertop. Am not a fan of backsplashes (extra expense/grout cleaning) so I would get the 3-4 " riser on the countertop and use a high quality, scrubbable paint. Personally, I would not get a marble countertop as it stains. I think black would make a nice flow with your stove top. Depending on your budget, there are some amazing choices - granite look-alikes, etc. To me, the cupboards are fine and pick up the colour of your tile. Before going to the time, effort and expense of painting them, I would wait. The walls needs some colour so the cabinets stand out - maybe a turquoisie/aqua/soft green or such. I. would think about wall colour and countertop colour change before painting the cabinets.

Mosaic nightmare! Sorry, but true! I'm with the rest-a hammer is your best friend! I would put in a solid surface countertop, maybe in a pretty light gray, and then go with white, or dark gray cabinets, and new pulls (black). Your appliances look new and pretty, so gray is always the best bet with stainless steel! If you do a new back splash, white subway tiles can not be beat! They are simple, elegant, and clean like a dream! Good luck, you have a great space to work with!

There's a lot you can do without breaking the bank. The cabinets look like they are in great shape. You can paint them, or remove the doors to create an open shelf look. The counter and back splash can be replaced. There are pleny of DIY back splash ideas here on Hometalk you can peruse. Counters may be more tricky to remove especially if you want to keep the lower cabinets. Here's a post that talks about kitchen updates that you'll never regret. Ohhhhhhh I would get rid of that hideous counter top and backsplash right away. It hurts my eyes to look at it. Something along the lines of granite or quartz would be nice...if you cant afford that...then look into just a plain counter top.

It would be a lot easier cheaper & less messy to make a cement countertop over the existing counter- they look amazing & are super easy (think the gorgeous floor in Anthropology) then seal with a food grade sealer you can get at home improvement stores!

Tami, I always try paint before anything. lol At least a small area, but it looks like part of your tile is missing on the front edge. I would get a small amount of black paint made especially for ceramics. Your cabinets are nice, but I would stain them with a med. grey stain. Sand first. Good luck. Have fun.

Ok, Here's my 2 cents...Carefully remove the upper cabinets, so you can remove the back splash & counters. Make sure you are careful removing the counters to save the bottom cabinets. I would also remove the 2 shelves & 1 upper cabinet above the stove to open up that space for floating shelves for decorative pieces. There are so many types of counters I won't make a suggestion other than pick your favorite color(s) & materials. For the back splash I would suggest either glass tile or subway tile. For the lower cabinets I suggest either a dark stain to bring out the wood grain, or black. The upper cabinets, I suggest white. Move the bookshelf to another part of the house. In it's place depending on the style of the rest of the kitchen...This might not work. Make a ceiling to floor industrial pipe & wood bookshelves customized to your needs to store all of your baking dishes, kitchen equipment such as standing mixer, toaster, waffle iron, seasonal items etc. Final suggestion, get a unique item like a dresser w/ drawers, build it up the surface to the level you want & add a counter top then paint it an unusual color to make it pop.
