Adjusting the feet of my washing machine kept it from "walking." There are also little rubber pads you can add under washing machines to reduce vibration, which should also help reduce "walking"
  • This is an indication of being out of balance. The first reason for this is overloading the machine. Many people stuff the machines in an effort to save time and money by thinking they will wash more with less water. This is simply not true. Overloading causes the balance springs not to properly prevent movement as they are carrying the extra weight of the load. The 2nd reason for this to occur is as Steve stated, If the machine feet are not properly adjusted or the rubber pads are damaged or missing the machine will walk. Another reason is that the floor that the machine sits on is slick and allows the feet to move around. If this is the case a few small L brackets can be secured to the side of the machine and the floor to keep in in place. Lastly you need to check to see if the packing bolts that secure the drum to the cabinets have been removed prior to the use of the machine. Oftentimes new machines comes with a single bolt fastened in the back of the machine that must be removed or loosened prior to use and other cases a small plastic bracket is in place. Its function is to hold the drum from falling off its mounts and bouncing around when it is shipped. Leaving this bolt or bracket in place causes the balance springs not to function and to take up the movement rather then passing it on to the cabinet itself.

You can also get anti vibration "platforms" to isolate the machine from the floor. These are great for wood frame homes or on second levels. Laundry rooms in basements or in homes with concrete floors are less prone to this vibration transmission. http://0vib.com/products-page/featured-home-page/ovib-washer-stand/
