Flower "penned" into my coffee table by four year old grandchild

My grandson drew a flower with an inkpen into the top of our cherry coffee table. Unfortunately, he pushed hard. Any suggestions besides refinishing the whole top?

Embrace it for memories!! If it is new, then distress it. If not, paint it, but don't get rid of it. That is something that will bring much joy and laughter. It's only a piece of furniture. You will be able to tell him about that many times in his life. Laugh and have fun with it!! What a blessing that he lives so close and you get to enjoy him. And remember, this is only a season in your lives. He will grow up one day.

@Judith Moore Well said. I wouldn't encourage that kind of behavior.
  • ...You dont say how attached you are to this coffee table, but I would embrace his inkpen art, and either paint and distress it , so as to ' blend it in '.... as Katrina suggested. ..and I like her response, its what I would do. lol. ; if you dont wish to do that, sawdust as a filler is your fiend. ...you could then re- stain your table top or re- finish .

Other than that IF YOU REALLY WANT TO remove it.. take some hairspray and soak a cloth and rub i over the ink it should come out with a couple of buffing.. then polish with lemon oil..

@Rita Wozniak I didn't think of the hairspray. Have tried that on clothes and it worked. Thanks for the suggestions.

If it is a pressure mark not an ink mark on the wood you can use heat to raise the grain of the wood. Look this up as a carpenter friend of mine told me this tip, but I am not sure what form the heat takes. It could be a towel with a steam iron over it used lightly but do ensure to read up on this first as you don't want to cause further damage to your furniture. If the table is veneer, don't use steam iron as it will lift the veneer off by loosening the glue that is underneath.

Mister Clean Magic Eraser, then a bit of sanding and buy a small can of Minwax Cherry stain.. I hope you can save it.

The product is found in hardware supplies, it's called Goo Be Gone . It works really good

@Melissa Have used that on other things, I would be afraid that would take the finish off the table, though.

There are wood filler pens that will work on that. Fill then use Chambry cloth to get residue off table.

I'm in the camp of 'embrace the memory' :) My husband and I had just purchased our first leather couch (and I might add, a beautiful piece of furniture) and our granddaughter was making a picture of her grandmother (me) using all kinds of creative avenues. Well, one of those 'creative moments' was to color my hair (red) with a bright red oil marker n' little did I know that she had moved from the table to the new couch! LOL ~ when I saw it . . . I almost cried, but I didn't. Instead, I told her how beautiful her art was & that she'd just gotten her first couch for . . . college!! :P The couch is hers and I still have that precious picture of me <3 No price for that kind of memory :)

Yes, Seena, that was more of an accident. My grandson knew better than to draw (gouge) a picture on a table. The words of his mom, not mine. : )
