How do I get the black marks off my composite deck?

As we all know New England is getting hammered with snow this year! And I had so much snow on the deck that I had to use the snowblower to get it off. I'm anticipating more snow and now I have a great deal of these black marks from the augers. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of them without removing the color?

In the spring, after the deck is completely dry, use a product called Jomax that is found at Lowe's. It's for composite decking and will usually clean dark spots, tree sap, mildew, etc. It seems to work better than Simple Green for hard to clean spots outdoors. If the spots are still visible, then you will have to wait for the deck to be completely dry and run a heat gun over the spots to bring back the color. I found this tip on the Azec deck site, The heat gun will bring back the color to the stained area.

I have an lighter color composite deck and it shows all stains. I'm assuming I can use the above method to remove them as well? Thanks

Jomax for composite decks is a great product to try first. There's more than one Jomax product so make sure you buy the one for decks. Then you can try 'Magic Erasers'. They are truly magic and they make one in a mop form with a long handle that could save your back and knees.

  • Try giving the manufacturer a call and see if they recommend any kind of rejuvenating product. They might have something for this purpose.

When you see any black stain on your deck caused by dirt or some ink, the first thing that comes to mind is cleaning it up immediately. Here mild soap mixed in water can be used to remove these stains. With the help of a scrubber, gently scrub the area that has got a color. We do not recommend you to use harsh chemical products like chlorine bleach to clean it. Always use mild cleansers that do not contain any abrasive particles.

White vinegar can also be very useful to remove black stains from a wood deck. Put some vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the stain area well. Let stand for about an hour. Then, use a clean, but damp cloth to thoroughly wipe off the vinegar.

Contact the company, you do not want to void any warranty you may have.

I agree with those who have suggested you contact the company. Sounds as though they have a product to use on the composite deck.

Hi Robin: Perhaps a bit of baking soda and some white vinegar will do the job.

  • I'd try some dish soap and a scrub brush but I'd definitely contact the manufacturer for the best tips.
