I have some wonderful mid-century modern/Danish modern pieces that I just love. I saw these 2 "diamonds in the rough" at our local Salvation Army. Tattered, with old traditional fabric on such a modern silhouette, screamed for rescue. I did. I have searched high and low and have not been able to find any information on them or even find any similar pictures. Does anyone have any idea? I have searched MCM, Danish, Scandinavian, Modern, Winged backed, etc. Nothing. The Papa Bear style by Hans J Wegner is the closest thing I could find. Before I recover, I would like to know something about them. Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

I hate it when people recover mid century style furniture such as this in a frumpy fabric. Aaargh. Sorry in advance to anyone out there who likes this fabric. It is just that it is not in keeping with the style of the chair. I hope you do something fun and funky with these two.

Do you mind if I post this in an online Mid-Century Group that I belong to? They're excellent at identifying things.

@Leslie D Leslie, Yes, that would be terrific if you wouldn't mind. Thank you!

The consensus is in and everyone feels that these are actually Hollywood Regency, and slightly earlier than Mid-Century, and that the upholstery is probably original to the style. One style flowed into the other somewhat. That would explain the slight differences in the "splayed" leg & arm shapes, as well as the tufted backs. Some thought that perhaps the arms had a "round" of fabric on them at some time or were even covered similarly to the Papa Bear chair (with only a portion of the top of the wood showing), but couldn't tell from the photos if the arms had any evidence of ever being partially covered.

@Leslie D Leslie, I had a fleeting thought that it might be Regency, but had dismissed the thought. It is hard to believe that the fabric might have been the original. The juxtaposition of the styles is not very pleasing to me. But, that's what makes the world go around. I truely appreciate your efforts and the feedback. Many thanks to everyone.

For those who are wondering what a "Papa Bear" chair looks like, this is it, and is one of the most iconic and desirable mid-century chair designs, selling for thousands of dollars.

The fabric texture and pattern doesn't seem to suit the chairs. Depends on your other décor, but I think an abstract might be a possible fun choice..
