Company Overview

I have been in construction of some type for 25 years. I first started out in the 1980s as a Carpenter helper, Later I work as surveyor and welder. Then as most young men the road called me. And I used my skills combined to get work as a Mill Wright "Traveling jack of all trades" After trips to the great lakes, Gulf coast of Texas And all sorts of plants in between. I picked up a large set of skills. When I returned to Atlanta in 1991 I worked as Field Engineer for The CONLAN CO. And started a career in Concrete ... See More tilt up buildings. I really enjoyed working in such large scale. I made it to post of Traveling Superintended and did work around the south east. but travel was just not for me. In 2004 I started Hudson Designs, I like what I do, It's little harder working for yourself but I can learn even more things to. As of the past few months some of my 3 D Historical model work has become notice Thanks to a Russian Group I do beta testing for. And Networx has drawn me a few new clients too!! Home Maintenance & Repairs: Should I fix my broken doorknob or replace the whole door?

I broke it when I was locked out because I needed to get in quickly. The hole where the knob used to be is pretty messed up as is the lock mechanism.

I will have to say, replace the door. This is a fiber core door and they are not to costly. ...»

The area is far to damaged to place wood filler into, it will fail. The other solution is to use a commercial steel plate that fits over this area but that will look like it belongs in a office or warehouse area.

Painting: Quick! I need your help!

Help! I cannot decide what to do about this mirror! I just painted the empire chest below it, and now the mirror sticks out like a sore thumb. To me, it looks too modern for the chest, ...»
especially once I distress the chest. Please offer me some suggestions! I thought about painting the mirror turquoise since I have some Annie Sloan Provence left. Or I could paint it white and distress it. Decisions, decisions! Thanks for your helpt!

Use a crackle finish in white. This will give it a distress look and help blend the two.

  • If You Have To Add 50% To An Initial Estimate To Get To The Real Price, You Need Another Estimate! http://www.akatlanta.com/-Free-Estimate-For-Remodeling

Remodeling: "The Old Add 50% Rule" - Is This For Real?

Being a design/build remodeling firm for 17 years, there is not a lot we haven't heard about home improvement and contractors. But this one made us do a double take. ...»

We blogged about an article today, the author is remodeling his kitchen and talked about places to splurge and places to save. The author also wrote this:

"It's difficult to make sweeping generalizations about kitchen renovations...other than the old 'add 50% to the initial estimate' rule"' ( http://bit.ly/RVQdoq )

Add 50% to the initial estimate? Has anyone heard of this? We're assuming this is referring to planning a DIY kitchen remodel; do you think so?

When we give an initial estimate, it only changes if the client decides to change the scope of the project. Our contracts are all-inclusive and guaranteed. This so-called "old rule" somehow never landed on our radar!

We'd love to hear your thoughts & experiences...We think if you have to add 50% to your initial estimate to get the real price, you need another estimate.

I agree, I have seen some others do this as well. ...»

I use the time VS materials method to do an estimate. Then I add a day to the job in labor to cover any unknown issues I may face. I look at what the material cost is VS my hourly rate and go from there. With the economy so slow I try to give my customers the best value for the price. I had rather have repeat customers.

Homemade Solar Laptop charger

My homemade solar laptop charging station was posted on a discovery channel website the other day...They include a link back to my blog page about it...but Also posted my video. ...»

I noticed a spike in my blog traffic and found this article.

http://dsc.discovery.com/gear-gadgets/how-to...

My idea for this project evolved from our many road trips to remote and isolated places. I started to bring my laptop along for writing journal post etc. I have used the car adapter to charge the netbook while actually traveling but once we hit camp it seemed a bit wasteful to fire up the truck to charge things.

This charging station uses a 10 watt solar panel, a compact sealed gel battery and mini charge controller. The charge controller ensures that the panels output is regulated to match the demand in the battery. This allows for longer battery life. I did some basic modifications to allow me to add additional panels or batteries, via some banana plug ports. These ports also allow me to monitor voltages in various configurations.

We did some camping in Zion National park a couple of years ago and camped in the "generator free" section of the campground....That was Gasoline powered noisy generators....my solar unit was just the ticket. I used it every day to recharge the batteries for my digital camera...which is now its primary use on many of our trips.

  • Do you have one of these in your house? This water pressure regulator keeps water pressure under 80 psi which in turn helps extend the life of your copper pipes & appliances.
  • Use a water pressure gauge to measure your, ummm, well water pressure :)
  • Old supply lines and shutoff valves like this one should be replaced before your spring a leak that can cause you quite a bit of aggravation and money.

Water Leaks: 3 Plumbing Tips that Will Help You Avoid Problems

Our house has suffered from its fair share of water disasters. And unfortunately we've come home to find water leaks in our ceiling just above our kitchen (this happened as we walked ...»
through the door from a red eye flight back from Seattle, NOT FUN!).

I've also handled numerous calls from our tenants that have dealt with overflowing toilets, faucets leaking, washer hoses bursting, you name it.

So after my neighbor had to replace his water pressure regulator I decided to share easy plumbing tips that you can act on today or over the weekend that will help prevent water leaks:

+Test your water pressure with a $10 gauge and make sure it's not above 80 psi

+If your water pressure is too high have a licensed contractor install a regulator

+Adjust your existing water pressure regulator to reduce pressure to 55-75 psi

+Replace old supply lines with the steel braided variety

+Replace old shutoff valves in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms with quarter turn ball valves-they are easier to use and rarely break compared to older valves

It's much cheaper to avoid replacing a collapsing drywall ceiling then actually having to hire a contractor to fix it :)

For more pictures and a video on how to adjust the water pressure in your house you can visit my latest blog post http://www.homerepairtutor.com/water-leaks-3...

Have a great day!
