Removing the grain from oak cabinets

I have builder grade oak cabinets that are stained in a natural color. I want to change to an off white. Instead of stripping and painting all the doors I plan to buy new doors/drawer fronts. The color I want only comes in Maple wood. How can I sand the grain from the frames of the cabinets so they can be painted to match the new doors without the grain from the oak showing through?

You would have to use a primer first. I just redid my oak natural cabinets but I used General Finishes Chalk Paint (3 coats) and I did not use a primer. The grain does not show through. You should try painting them instead, a lot cheaper and they come out very nice.

@Kim No I did not. I used a liquid desander that I purchased at Loews. It removes all the dirt and grease. then I used the "milk paint" I purchased from General Finishes. I did three coats, I let each coat dry before starting the next coat (one day drying time). My cabinets were in really good shape but the finish was coming off so they looked terrible and I was really tired of the natural oak color.

I recommend using chalk paint, lightly sanding after two coats. This will act as both a primer and a wood grain smoother. There are other products available for this but they're more difficult to use.

Thank you for all the comments. I wanted the project to be as quick as easy as possible so that is why I thought I'd buy the doors/drawers already painted in the specific color. I think I can buy the paint from the cabinet distributor for but I doubt it is chalk paint. I have to be sure the two different woods won't be noticeable even though hey will be painted the same color. I will talk to someone who sells Sloane paint to see what they think.

The only primer hardy enough to cover oak's grain is Gripper. Then you can use any type paint and it will adhere with no grain.
