Who knows what smell will keep a dog off the couch?

I have a friend that has dogs. She learned somewhere that if you take a measuring tape, and lay it across the couch (with the measuring tape extended) , the dogs will not go on the couch. it worked.

Dogs all hate the smell of tea-tree oil.put 10 drops in a spray bottle and add water,spray furniture lightly with solution once weekly.
