Sarah, I've painted many a paneled door without having to follow a pattern such as you describe. The secret is a product called "Floetrol" (For latex paints) or "Penetrol" (For oil-based paints). These products are made by Flood (www.flood.com) and are readily available at "The BORG." (Big Orange Retail Giant). Mixed in the correct proportions, one can roll or brush paint irrespective of direction, without a single brush mark. The end result looks like a sprayed on paint application.
  • Good advice - I have heard of Floetrol but haven't used it yet. I took a look at this technique from a number of online paint sites, so I'll have to give your suggestion a try for the next door. And there's a new paint line by Glidden that is a gel made for doors, which won't work with Floetrol/Penetrol, so the technique should still be used for paints that can't be mixed.
