What type of poly can I use over a faux finish granite bar in kitchen?

I was told water base poly is not food safe, when I googled it I read FDA says it is safe after its dry. Anyone know anymore on this subject?

It is safe after it is dried and cured. All finishes need a certain period of time to cure, or fully harden. They may be dry to the touch but until they cure they are susceptible to damage. The container directions will specify the required time; or you can call the tech line, which should also be found on the container. You do need to make sure the clear coat is compatible with the faux finish used on the bar, so if you have left over I would road test it on a scrap of wood. Also, bear in mind that, regardless of your counter top material, you should always use a cutting board and heat resistant trivet, preferably one that allows for air circulation beneath. On the bar, I'd also encourage the use of coasters. I'm including a couple of links that may ease your mind. http://www.woodmagazine.com/materials-guide/finishes/is-your-finish-food-safe/ http://www.cutleryandmore.com/john-boos-maple/ez-do-p13350

@Suzanne Lawson I thought the same thing, that it is safe after drying and curing but the guy at Lowes insisted thats not the case and was pushinng me to use a two part almost epoxy type product. I dont see how that could be safer. and as I said I googled food safe polys and read FDA also said what we agree on. I will check out the links you sent see what they say. Thanks so much for your input and Links
  • varnish plush is the best product out there. You have to order it from Faux Effect in Vera Beach Florida. If your finish is dark, you need to put one of gloss varnish plus over it then 2-3 coats of satin. If it is a light color, just apple 3-4- coats of satin varnish plus, allowing for proper drying time between coats.

I used a kit to do my counter tops from www.Gianigranite.com. The top coat was included with the kit; but it said to let it cure for a couple of weeks. The suggestions from Suzanne are right on spot. Even now that the finish has cured, I do not use the counter-top for chopping or place hot out of the oven or stove items on the tops or scrub with harsh cleaners.. You really don't want to do that to any material. If I had children or grandchildren, I would not let them play on the counter tops either.
