The floor always feels gritty underfoot like it always needs vacuuming.

i bought a product in the tile department at home depot made for sealing and shining the slate floor. I tried it on a small section and didn't see much difference. I tried good old "Mop and Glo" that I already had. It looked beautiful and sooo much cheaper. Try the cheaper stuff in an inconspicuous place first.

Heidi has it right. Most sealers that can be used on slate aren't that effective. I would recommend some type of oil based water seal but since Thompsons water seal and the other major brands changed their formulas, they aren't much good. You could use a water based concrete sealer but most are much heavier and simply look like a clear paint has been applied which also scratches and will leave white marks where it's scratched. I think Heidi has the answer; good ole "Mop and Glo" For the price and availability I don't think you could go wrong.

As a retired builder mostly "mostly tired" I always use a tile grout sealer. It is not going to have much shine but it will be sealed . then you can use Mop and Glo.

As someone that works for a tile installation company I would suggest that you spend the money on a good stone sealer from someone that knows what will work on slate and what won't. The last thing that you should do with a slate floor is experiment. Slate is porous so will have a tendency to absorb what you put on it. If it is something that does not work correctly with it, it would be difficult if not impossible to get it removed from the stone and would cause other products to then not work. There are enhancing sealers that will change the color of the stone...so be clear what you want it to look like when you are done with the sealing. Slate is NOT something to use Mop and Glo on!!! You also don't want it to be slippery after it is sealed.
