Have to tell you this is not a safe way for you to locate a "safe" handyman.

I agree. Please ask friends, neighbors or church. All the wrong people come out of the woodwork on these type of forums.

This is true. Even through volunteers with Eldersource Lifeline and Catholic organization have been some bad ones The back check ups on people are not good at all.

Have you tried Home Depot? I believe they still have a referral service.

Hometalk is one of the safest venues to ask for professional help.

I would go on face book and get the name of someone a friend would recommend.

Contact a school. College or high school. I hire young people to help me with the rentals all the time as well as work around our house. They have to be recommended by someone you trust. The best ones are sons or daughters of service people such as electricians, air conditioning and heat or plumbers. You have to be willing to let them learn on your stuff. I have a pool guy who learned how to fix my pump and numerous other things by taking the pump apart and figuring out what was wrong with it. Yes it took him longer but he had a great time and there is now someone besides me who can get all this stuff done around here now. Someone who can keep an eye out when I'm gone on vacations. I actually have several of these people with various abilities and various price ranges. I'm always generous with pay to start so they want to come and learn. A lot cheaper than hiring professionals.

Try HomeAdvisor (www.homeadvisor.com), kind of like Angie's List but free. I used them to find someone for a job at work.

I agree with Patti, go to homeadvisors.com. I used a retired electrician and a retired plumber from that site for a couple jobs at my old house. They did a great job, for a very reasonable price. And you don't have to pay a fee like you do at Angie's List. Besides, I like to help our retiree's supplement their fixed income doing what they know and like.

Try HomeAdvisor.com. It's the FREE version of Angie's List.

Seriously, check with friends, neighbors, church members, or a local church, your local hardware store. That will be your safest avenue.

Despite where you find a referral.. be it Angie's List, Hometalk, HomeAdvisor, word of mouth, etc.. It is critical to perform due diligence research on the person you engage. At the very least, ask for 3+ references you can call, gather an insurance certificate and then call the ins. company to verify coverage, and always get a written agreement. The burdon lies with the consumer on this. As a contractor, I can say that 90% of prospective clients do not perform background research even though I make any and all the above information available. Perhaps this sounds extreme for a handyman, but it's not. That is, unless you sincerely want to hire someone "on the side" knowing that you are taking safety and liability risks. Obviously, that is a different situation altogether.

We highly recommend HomeAdvisor, based on our experience just today! We had a garage door opener installed by someone we contacted through HomeAdvisor, and we were thrilled! Professional, friendly, prompt, everything we could have asked for and more. We will not hesitate to use HomeAdvisor again.
