Weed and feed will remove some weeds but not crab grass, Johnson grass and other weeds.

Not all weed and feeds have the same active chemical, so you may need to experiment to see what works best in your lawn. Weed and feeds for St. Augustine lawns have traditionally relied on Atrazine as the weed killer, but Scotts has reformulated its Bonus S to use Metsulfuron-methyl. For crabgrass you really need to use a pre-emergent about a month before you apply your weed and feed.

Interestingly, I live in St. Augustine. The Scotts brand formulated specifically for St. Augustine grass is advertised heavily down here. I presume it works. Crab grass is a nuisance. I would dig as much out as possible and then put the Scotts down. With that being said, does anyone have a solution for torpedo grass? it grows in my borders and makes a mess when I have to try to remove the underground root system. I can't use weed killer because it will kill my border plants.

@Georgia Garrett What is torpedo grass? I have some new weeds, or whatever, and don't know what they are.

I live in Texas. I've always used "Weed B Gone" on my St. Augustine grass. Works great on broadleaf weeds. The best weed defense is a healthy lawn. Fertilize water and mow regularly . The thicker the grass, the less weeds will pop up.

We are not growing St. Aug. at my house anymore, too many pest problems, treatments are no longer working. The U of FL agriculture dept reports that current treatments will no longer kill cinch bugs and other, they are resistant. Crabgrass and some other weeds, the most invasive kinds, of course, have to be dug. I have spent many, many, many hours of digging. Now, bermuda has almost taken over the yard and I love it, still have weeds though.
