Should I use flat or latex for homemade chalk paint?

I wanted to mix my own color of chalk paint and got several recipes. However, do you use latex or flat paint for the mixture?

Latex paint can come in many sheens. There is flat, eggshell (some people call it ("satin"))and there is also semi-gloss. So in order to do a chalk paint mix, you would need either flat or satin in a latex paint.

I used satin paint with plaster Paris, and water. It worked great. I liked that I did not have to prime first, all I did was a light sand.

I just use flat if I am making my own.

Use a flat or matt paint. You can add non sanded grout , plaster of Paris or calcium carbonate any of these will give the finish of a chalk paint.

The little sample jars from Home Depot work great. They only come in flat and they're inexpensive.

Brenda, that is what I use..........very inexpensive. I think I heard that Ace hardware has them right now on sale for 99 cents.

What happens if you were to use semi-gloss paint to make chalk paint?

That would defeat the purpose. It is a chalky look you are going for so it would not work if you desire that kind of look.
