How can this small powder room be updated?

Pat
by Pat
Since I have limited funds, I am looking for suggestions to update the powder room, which I think can be done with some paint. I need to work around the lighted mirror, flooring, chrome faucet and vanity. What colors would you suggest to paint the walls and/or vanity? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This is the mirror I am trying to work around, It has a dark metal frame.
The vanity is white beadboard with a biege/white top. The chrome faucet will not be replaced. I recently replaced the chrome accessories with oil rubbed.
The ceramic floor is beige/white.
This antique foyer stand will remain (if possible). This stand has a white/gray topper.

I love the mirror. What about doing the vanity black, either paint or laminate it. Put a warm medium color on the walls. Teal would be a nice choice. But not light, medium color. Bold colors look awesome. If their is a cabinet above the toilet, black also. Counter tops stay the same.

@Roseann That's great! Since the walls are already a beige, I won't have to repaint (yet). Thank you!
  • @Pat ....I always check the ' location ; of my bathroom , in accordance with Feng Shui, before I ' do some work to it ". lol. .....; There are certain directions that are harmonious with certain colors, in Feng Shui , which will help your bath remain harmonious with the elements in your bathroom. You did not say what the other colors in your home are, which is helpful in order that you can have some ' color flow' , in accordance to the Feng Shui as well.

@Shelby @ The Weathered Barn Studio You did not offend me in the least about the flowers. Glad you told me. The harmonizing makes sense. I study energy healing so flow is important. House faces southwest so the bathroom would face northeast. Not very familiar with Feng Shui, but it makes sense. Let me know what you think about this. Earth and water are already taken care of because of location and room. Metal is in the fixtures. Paint the vanity dark brown to ground it, swap out the faucet, on table old green wine bottle with dried bamboo or vine, white and green towels, yellow and red candles, wicker wastebasket and soap dispenser, dark brown shelving above toilet, picture of lotus flower over table.

I think a light silver grey would look great on the walls, paint the vanity a darker color to match and voila

love that mirror and the stand! I would paint the cabinet a color similar to the stand. Keep walls neutral to focus on those nice pieces you have Change what is in the vase, your accessories can make everything pop; I personally would chose bold colors for the accessories, and change with the seasons.

Perhaps the faucet could be used to upgrade a powder room, laundry room or bar, we were able to do that at our house. Good luck.😊

Behr's Creamy Mushroom might be a nice color for the walls. I'd paint all the trim white to tie in with the vanity. Then you have a nice neutral and beachy feel to punch up with accessories. Love the mirror and antique piece.
  • OnBlissStreet OnBlissStreet on Mar 06, 2015
I would definitely do the trim white to match the vanity. The faucet is very bright, draws my eye right to it. I would try to scare up the funds to replace it to coordinate with the mirror. If you want to stick to neutrals- autumn haze or wicker are really beautiful with white/black accents.
  • Becky Becky on Mar 06, 2015
You could use ORB spray paint on the faucet to match the other accessories.

@Becky I will check out Pinterest and try painting first as it is less expensive than replacing. Thank you! I have a few extra dollars to put into accessories.

I like the idea of a light gray. And I agree with others about the faucet, I love the shape of the one you have, but it is too bright for the small bathroom and it is all you see. If you can manage to save the money, Home Depot has one that looks just like yours in the bronze for under $40 and it would go perfect. @Shelly Dabichan Thank you for letting me know. I will add it to my wish list.

Well I think your bathroom is really nice....but if I had to change something it would be small things. Like the color of the wastebasket....I would choose something dark like the mirror to tie in the color elsewhere. On the table the flowers in the vase I would go with something white or off white to tie in with the sink. I like the flooring, but if you wanted to change I guess I would go with hardwoods that are dark to match the other dark pieces in the room, but if its a smaller room don't do this, it will make it look smaller. You can use area rugs on the floor maybe. I cant find too many things wrong with this bathroom otherwise.
    • Pat Pat on Mar 06, 2015
@Elizabeth Thank you. I agree the wastebasket and other small things need to be changed out. These are carryovers from my Zen bathroom in the other house. I do like the flooring which makes this an easier redo.

I realize you said that the house is near the beach and you like to keep the large spaces neutral, light and airy but with that ornate mirror and antique table in this room trying to do that may create a very jarring vibe. Your instincts already led you to those rubbed bronze accessories, there's a reason for that. Why not take the plunge and turn this one small space into a surprising, decadent jewel? Since budget is an issue and that beadboard vanity totally doesn't mesh with the mirror or the table why not skirt it in a great fabric? Joann Fabrics usually has some kind of great coupon running if you sign up for their emails. Haunt yard sales for fancy drapes that people are getting rid of for a couple bucks and cut them down so the pleating and such is already done for you. You can attach with sticky velcro so it's easy to take off and wash. The TP holder could be moved to the wall or poke through the fabric. Paint the trim bright white and top of the walls a silvery grey. Use inexpensive trim to put frames and a chair rail on the wall that you can paint out to look like expensive wainscot. paint the bottom half bright white and inside the frames bring the grey to ground it. Add lots of art to the walls. If you can't find art you like back to the yard sales for ornate frames you can pull the ugly art out of and spray paint the frames in a variety of finishes from the oiled bronze to white to silver and hang them nested inside one another with a small plainly framed family photo or piece of interesting textile in the middle. Depending on the height of your ceiling add a fancy chandelier, it doesn't have to work, you can pull the wiring out and add battery operated candles for when you entertain. And I totally agree with everyone who says that faucet needs help, whether you spray paint it or replace it, as it is it's practically getting up and dancing a tango while shouting "Hey, look at me, I'm CHROME!!" I actually envy you this makeover, it could be such fun!

@pat I would go for something fancy, plenty of crystals and drops that's still a small enough scale so it doesn't overpower the space. I'd look for one of those bright brass ones people are pulling out of their houses and selling for cheap so I could take the drops off, spray paint over the brass with a better metallic, and reassemble without a huge amount of trouble. That's how I made almost all the lamps my husband and I had in our first apartment. I found Goodwill lamps with horrid colors and patterns but nice shapes, made a paint booth out of a big cardboard box on the patio and sprayed them. The project came in at under $50 for 6 lamps. They came out so nice that we kept them for almost 10 years until we changed styles, and some of them still reside with family members.

Can the mirror be moved? It needs to be brightened up. I would white prime and then go to paint store and get swatch cards. I went with a natural green. Whole house was done in pink, even decorator said too much pink from previous owner, Forest green, have you thought of that, check it out with swatch card. Different shades.

If you would like a light, beachy feel to your bathroom, you may want to reconsider oil rubbed bronze and paint the mirror as that seems to be dictating how to decorate the bathroom. I did a search of this hometalk and pinterest for "beachy bathroom" and there are tons of ideas. I hope you post your bathroom when it is done as I would love to see the transformation.
    • Pat Pat on Mar 06, 2015
@Christine I know painting the mirror white would lighten it up a great deal and is more in line with my style. However, I am thinking the ornate Tuscan design may not work well with white. I had thought about painting it white but decided against it because of the style.

I would use your gray palate and paint the wall BM Bone Black which is a gray color, or use SW Falling Star Gray paint. I would paint the vanity a darker color on the paint card. Or use Oil Rubbed Bronze as someone else suggested. I would not spray paint the faucet, it will never last. If you go with the gray colors, your faucet will look just fine. You might want to spray paint the toilet paper holder and knobs to match the faucet. Another thing I would do is get some Mapai grout color changer. It has a 25 year warranty, and I have used it in the bathroom, and it looks great. I used the Pearl Gray. All you have to do is clean the grout gently and brush on with a tooth brush or small art brush. Let it dry and scrap any excess off. Of course try to be careful and not get too much excess. I have a friend who used it in her kitchen, and only one bottle was needed for her kitchen, breakfast area and laundry room. This stuff is amazing and will change the appearance of your floor without the cost of a new floor. I think a bottle of this is around $10. Basically what I am saying is gray and white with silvers. Great combination. Light blue and white is great too.
    • Pat Pat on Mar 06, 2015
@Dee Never thought of changing the color of the grout. I will definitely check into this!

WOW!!! So many wonderful ideas! I just finished swapping out the verde chandelier and pendant lights in the kitchen/dining room and brass cabinet pulls in kitchen with brushed nickel. Luckily, the walls are neutrals instead of the hot pink/bright green/bright blues. The agents must have told the original owners to paint! I wanted to paint the mirror in the powder room, but it has such an ornate Tuscan design that I decided to work with it. Love the idea of painting the faucet, but the water is really hard so keeping it looking good could be a problem. I have a lot to think about, but the faucet will definitely get swapped out so the chrome one stops doing the tango and shouting. LOL

I like the traditional elements in your bathroom, and would embrace that style. Have you thought about wallpaper - hundreds of colours, patterns to make the mirror and table really be at home. Would replace the wicker basket with something more classy for towels. Would substitute the glass vase for a ceramic one, and the flowers once you do your wall treatment.
    • Pat Pat on Mar 07, 2015
@Marion Nesbitt The bathroom has good bones, and I will be staying with traditional elements. Thank you.

Thats what I like about your bathroom is the mirror. I love antiques and that's what it reminds me of. Don't change the mirror. Just my opinion.

We just did our small bathroom that is in a 35 yr old mobile. We painted the walls, that were a terrible brown and beige floral wallpaper, with a silver colored paint, did the trim with a light gray, gray marble tile for the floors, took the whole wall mirror off, put a oval frosted mirror up and we left the top of the vanity the same, but painted the cabinet doors the gray trim color. We made a picket fence for the opposite wall of the vanity painting the posts/supports the accent gray. Using the silver for the primary wall color, made the bathroom look bigger and really lightened it up.
  • Cheryl Cheryl on May 01, 2015
I would paint the walls a bright shade of coral. With everything basically neutral & it being a small room, I think that room could use a punch of bright.
  • B. Enne B. Enne on May 01, 2015
I would paint or gel stain the vanity an espresso colour and paint the walls a soothing silvery aqua and paint the trim the same white that is on the table top.

Since your funds are limited, I would suggest (like so many others did, but I didn't read all the comments) a rich paint color in a matte or eggshell finish. But first, I would look for a suitable patterned rug for the floor from which I would choose the wall color. Then I would change out the chrome faucets for faucets with a finish that closely matches the mirror and the TP holder. Then, if or when you can afford it, I would find a framed poster or painting that goes well in the room. I would choose a landscape so there was something interesting to look at while sitting on the throne. Some lush towels, at least for when you are having people over, would be a nice touch.

Love the mirror and foyer table. I wouldn't change them but play up their beauty. A quart of paint in Satin or Semi-gloss in Unbleached Sand or Country White both @ Walmart will brighten up the room. Then by adding complimentary colors with your linen and wall art, your room will pop! And your linens can be purchased at your local thrift store for pennies. Have fun.
