Found this vintage GE Ice Cube tray at a thrift store. Do you remember these old trays? They made the best ice cubes! I hate how people discard unused items! I decided to repurpose this adorable tray into a succulent planter!
Remember these old metal ice cube trays? Looks like a planting opportunity!
The tiny compartments and vintage pink metallic color work great with succulents. You will need an old ice cube tray, cactus potting soil, pebbles and 7 tiny succulent plants in various colors and varieties. My plants came from Home Depot.
Fill the tray about 1/2 way with dirt. Remove plants from their pots, remove excess soil with your fingers until they fit into the ice cube tray slots. Some plants can be split with a sharp knife if needed, but usually they crumble apart pretty easily.
I left some of the compartments empty to make room for the larger plants to grow. After they are planted, add more soil to the top of the tray. Then cover the exposed soil with pebbles. Water lightly, you don't want to over water. It is not necessary to add drainage holes to the bottom of the tray. You never know, you may want to make ice with it some day!

Clever idea. I remember those ice trays well. The reminder makes me appreciate my automatic ice maker even more.
