How do you fix a wall that had old plastic paneling glued on?

We are gutting our kitchen and putting in all new cabinets, applicances, etc. But the walls had a plastic paneling on them so we tore it off but now it has old glue and is rough. My husband has tried sanding but it's a difficult process. We want to paint the walls.

  • I have had some good luck with putty knives for knocking it off before with minimal to no tearing off the paper - in other cases we simply choose to remove the drywall & redo it. Now we simply always plan on removing the drywall to fix any air-leakage / insulation areas & ensure that all the electrical & plumbing is in good condition
  • Sounds like it would be easier to put up new sheetrock and float. .

I've done this by putting the thinnest sheet rock you can find directly over the old wall.

If you are open to other things than painting you might cover the wall with fabric such as burlap, printed canvas or anything that has some weight to it. Staple it up and use thin trim to cover the staples. That way you can change it as your decor changes.

I had the exact same situation! I sanded as much as I could and then skim coated with sheetrock compound to create a smooth surface on the wall. Long and messy but the walls look great now!

I ran into this twice. First time we had to pull out the old drywall and put in new. the second time it was a smaller area and less glue so we had a professional come in and smooth it down, then put an orange peel finish on it
