Ideas to update my laminate counters in my kitchen

My kitchen counters are laminate. I cannot afford to replace them. Any ideas on how to update them to a more current/modern look? My budget would be $200 - $250 with all labor and work done by myself. Thanks.

Years and years ago, I read two ideas for this: in both, be sure to clean the countertops well. Then (a) paint them whatever color or pattern you want, then seal it with several layers of marine sealant; OR (2) lay down pieces of wood on top of them (so it will look like a wood countertop) and then the same - seal with several layers of marine sealant. I haven't tried either of these ideas yet, but I am going to this summer. Good luck.
  • I did the brown paper bags on my kitchen counters....they are gorgous!! People can not believe it paper sacks! I bought a package of 50 lunch size bags for 99 cents. Torn them into different sizes and crumpled them. Mixed glue (99 cent of large bottle) with water to a consistent of decoupage. Dipped my pieces in and then squeezed excessive out. Began laying them on counter (be sure to overlap and turn at different angles). I put several coats over the top with more glue/water. After drying, then I proceeded with 8 coats of polyurethane. I have had down for over a year with out any damage from use or water. I did go up over my trim around my counter to give it the inch above the counter to give extra protection from possibly peeling back. Look online for many instruction/videos. It's a cheap but really classy change in my kitchen. I love it!

Many on this board have painted their laminate countertops and also you can buy a product where you smear concrete on them....a topping not really heavy. I have seen people use regular paint with the sparkles used for cement tossed on and a good food safe epoxy...one woman said her countertops were still good several years later. You can also use wood and make countertops to fit over your existing countertops...could be reclaimed or inexpensive wood and then seal them well. I was about to paint mine but a serious leak means tearing out walls and floors so I am renovating my kitchen. http://www.younghouselove.com/2014/03/trying-our-hand-at-ardex-concrete-counters/ http://www.uglyducklinghouse.com/i-painted-my-kitchen-countertops/

Terry said it very well! It's just a matter of what you want now. I'm getting ready to skim concrete on mine. Good luck!

There is a product you can buy on Amazon called Giani Granite- it's a paint kit that includes everything you need. It'smreasonably priced and it walks you through the process step by step- I used it on my counter tops and it came out amazing!

I've used it before and it's really great! It's especially nice if you have mismatched pieces. It helps unify your kitchen! :)

You can actually tile on top of the counter and put on a wood, metal or ceramic edge and still stay within your price range.

@Darla That is what I am going to do to my counters. I chose to use 12 inch tiles to match my floor and avoid a lot of grout lines

I used to have my own business painting counter tops with the Giani paints. Have done several dozen. Hurt my back almost 6 years ago, 4 major back operations since, and am now permanently disabled and cannot legally drive. I taught the Giani team how to do evening.

I have to be honest here. We just replaced old broken ( 1930's) counters in the kitchen we're renovating ( retirement project) and I actually chose laminate. The trendy ones of today I knew would require a lot of special care. With laminate, I can set a hot glass dish down right out of the oven with no fear of A. counter top damage, or B. dish breakage. Plus, it's smooth enough to roll out dough. I chose a marble-look product. No special cleaning products required, just wipe it down. It's a matte finish so no worry about glossiness, even. ( Saved that for the tiles on the backsplash, lol). I truly love it.

I re-did my laminate countertops about 2 years ago to make it look like granite tops. There is a demo online that shows how to do it, using various colors of craft pain and then sealing it with clear varnish. I recommend you look at samples of granite colors that you like, then play with the color combo. I love what I've done with mine and the entire thing was probably $50 or so.
