I Primed the base really well with an oil-based primer, then painted with some latex paint that was lying around. After 2 light coats of white I sanded sealed it with some areosol Shillac. Hopefully it will hold up. The top was sanded down and stained with a dark walnut minwax, and poly'ed(gloss) 7 coats. thanks for looking
