Cleaning out this cappuccino machine

I have this cappuccino machine. It had been broken for a really long time and I finally ordered a replacement piece. I tried cleaning the whole thing out really well but I've run it a couple of times with just water and no coffee and the water still comes out slightly brown.
There had been water sitting in the reservoir for all this time and there's a buildup of something in there but I can't figure out what it is or how to get rid of it. I tried hot water and shaking it but it didn't work. I can't stick anything in there because it's a small opening and it's deep.
Any idea on what to do?
In the second photo you can sort of see that the inner part of the reservoir is too different colors. The lighter color is how it should look. The darker color is whatever it is that is stuck on there.
Thanks in advance.

To clean it out, do it the same way you are doing, except add vinegar to the water that goes into machine. You can use about 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water in a full pot. You might need to do it a few times. If it's really bad, you can use 1/2 vinegar to 1/2 water. The vinegar will help to get rid of the deposits from the water and will remove the yuck. Once the water mixture runs clean you should run it a few times again with just water.

We have a similar machine. We have used full vinegar to run through it. Since it has been siting you may have to do this several times and let the vinegar sit for a while. Then run the machine several times with just water to rinse it until you can no longer smell the vinegar. Do this as a matter of regular cleaning as well.

I would have done the exact same thing.I have a Mr coffee iced tea machine that we use weekly-I don't like powdered ice tea and when I can't get the tea stains out of it I run it a few times with just water, no teabags. If your machine doesn't come clean from doing that I'd ask the company.I'd be afraid to use a chemical cleaner.

Use full vinegar. Let it sit with the machine on for several hours, then run it through at least four cups. Then run it through again at least four cups with clean water. Don't use oxyclean. Residue may leak into your coffee when you make it.

My coffee pot was really gummed up...espresso machine....I thought it was done...in fact I ordered another one. I put straight vinegar in the machine as a last ditch effort and left it for a day or two..I was planning to throw it out when the vinegar did not work or so I thought...but when I turned it on I got water ...so then I cleaned it with a commercial citrate descaler...and it is working great now...but now I have two...the old one and the new one...refurbished and non-returnable. Ah well..you never know.

Yes clean it out with vinegar-- but use white distilled vinegar. It is the best choice for cleaning out espresso and coffee machines. I clean out my espresso machine once a month now. I add one part vinegar to four parts water. Even though the vinegar and water solution gets heated up while I run the espresso machine to flush out the water, I heat the vinegar for 30 seconds in the microwave before pouring into the machine. Thank you everyone for the advice. I will try a combination of the suggestions, using vinegar and will update and how it goes.

Hi, I clean my coffee maker, tea kettle and espresso maker often. I use white vinegar with a small amount of baking soda. I put the baking soda in first, in the coffee maker I put the baking soda in the grounds catch. i run the machines and it comes out clean. We have very hard water and it works great. I use 1/2 cup vinegar 1/4 cup baking soda. Hope this helps,
