Our house is bursting at the seams with stuff, people, cats, tech things, books and collectibles. However, we are running out of room. Okay, we have run out of room. My husband bought this home before we were a couple and he wasn’t thinking about a family when he bought it. It’s a great starter home, it’s a great home for a small (one child) family. We are not that. We are a scaled down modern day version of the Waltons. There are 5 people in the house, my husband, myself, my grown daughter, her tween daughter and our 9 year old son. AND we have rescued 7 cats. But wait, there’s more. We are ALL collectors. So space really is at a premium. Everyone has their own room, but the adults rooms are so small that we don’t have room for bedside tables. It’s really a problem because we need some place for drinks, remotes, books, kindles, tablets, phones, everything. So I saw those really cool Ikea tables that roll over the bed and thought those would be perfect for those two rooms. But then I saw the price tag on them, $130! HOLY COW. I mean I love Ikea, but man their prices are crazy. So, being handy, I took a good hard look at the table, and decided to make it. For less than the cost of one table from Ikea, I made two tables.
We can't decide on a finish for either table.
And it took less time to make the two tables than it did to drive to the nearest Ikea! Thanks to my local hardware store cutting the wood for me, they saved me even more time! It took about 90 minutes to make both tables including sanding them down.

The materials used were:

1 2 x 12 x 12

1 2 x 4 x 8

4 2 in. Soft Rubber Rigid Caster with 90 lb. Load Rating

#10 3 in. Phillips Square Flat-Head Multi-Material Screws

To save time and energy (and mess) I had the store cut the the lumber when I picked it up.

The 2 x 12 was cut into 3 pieces, for the top and legs. The 2 x 4 was cut to size.

  • Hello! First I didn't even know Ikea made something like this and second I didn't know that you could have the store cut lumber! Very smart of you, and thank you for sharing :-) Edited to add I love your duvet cover, I have a tattoo just like that covering my back.

@RCooper @ thoughtsbyher.com HI! First I found it by accident and then when I saw the price I was floored. But I knew I had to have two. Home Depot will make straight cuts. They usually cost a quarter each but most times they forget to charge! Sounds like an awesome tat!
