I have St.

Augustine and Centipede and Lesperdezie is taking over my lawn. What can I treat it with without killing my grass? Charlie in Marietta,

any of the broadleaf weedkillers from Bonide, Ortho or Bayer will kill lespedeza....but your FIRST job is to make the grass more vigorous so it chokes out the weeds.

Thank you for your response. Is it time to fertilize now or should I wait until spring? Also, should I begin treating my lawn With one of the items you reccomended for lespedeza now or wait until spring?

You are just on the cusp of last time for fertilizing St. Augustine, Charlie. I would focus on getting your St. Augustine healthy first, or there is just going to be more chance for opportunism where the invaders have died out.

Thanks Doug for your input. As soon as we have a good chance of beneficial rain I will try to get the fertilize out just ahead of the rain.

Charlie, wouldn't the rain wash away the fertilizer? Would it be better to put the fertilizer out just after the rain, so the ground is damp, but runoff doesn't wash it away? (Just a thought). I've been trying to build up my lawn this summer, too.

@Elise: A downpour might wash away the fertilizer, but a good, regular rain will work the chemicals into the soil, which is where you want them. If you water after a rain, the fertilizer may stick to the leaves of the grass, potentially burning them.

@Charlie: You're welcome. Good luck with your lawn.

Elsie, you may have a good point but my yard is relatively flat and I don't think the run off would be a problem. I've read in times past that you are only supposed to fertilize St. Augustine very lightly. Does anyone have an input on this?

@Charlie, follow the label directions for the fertilizer. Using more isn't better. To really customize your fertilizer you should have a soil test done via the University of Georgia's Extension Service. They cost $15 and are well worth the investment. I don't think you have time right now since the clock is ticking in regard to fertilizing, but this would be very good information to have on hand when spring comes around. Thanks Doug. I live within 3 miles of the Cobb County extension office so I will be getting some soil testing done. Your info. is very helpful and I appreciate it.
