Working in the yard today, I spotted a fearsome-looking insect...but this is one of the good guys.

Wheel bugs prey on Japanese beetles, caterpillars and stinkbugs, so I left him alone. Another good reason not to handle him - the proboscis he uses to snack on insects is sharp....he'll stab your hand if you grab him!

I've never seen a wheelbug in East Point but I have seen many of the nymphs.

Yay! Good news, we saw the nymphs crawling all over a cucumber in our school garden. Luckily I left them, since we were going to pull the plants in preparation for fall. But I was thinking they were bad guys when we saw them. We are constantly learning so much cool stuff about insects, good to know they can stab, another reminder to always wear gloves, especially for the kids.
