Old Art-Deco Style Vanity Becomes a Desk

I came across this old vanity at a thrift store. The price had been marked down again & again but nobody wanted her. I wanted a different desk and thought this would fit the bill just fine.
A little too "orangey" for me so we're going to make a couple of color changes.
Love the detail...
and the Bakelite hardware.
About 80 years of gunk on the top. Nail polish, polish remover, scratches, paint & stickers.
80 years of gunk...gone!
Decided to do a 2-tone stain treatment. Ended up using Pecan & Jabobean simply because that's what I had on hand. The dribble you see towards the bottom? Thanks to Mr./Mrs. Bird for leaving their calling card.
The top came out nice enough. Jacobean stain color.
The Bakelite hardware cleaned up really well. More Pecan & Jacobean stain.
A little labor intensive...but when isn't it? A "new" desk for just the price of this old piece ($20) and left-over cans of stain. I like it.

What did you take the old finish off with? I have an Art Deco three mirrored vanity with two side dressers and it's finish is a dark heavy alligator texture from the layers of stains and waxes. It also has veneer but not with contrasting shades.

@Suzy Mark At first it was to be just a project to work on in my free time. Now, I don't think I can part with it!!

@Eric Turner Thank you so much! It was one of my first "up-cycles" and I really had no idea where I was going with it. Just did what was appealing to me. Guess I'm an art deco fan and didn't even know it!.
