Easy DIY Grommet Curtain

I made a skirt for my laundry room counter top using grommets and tension rods. It was a simple project with a lot of "wow" factor. Keep reading below to get the idea, but I highly recommend reading the full tutorial on my blog, Useful Beautiful Home.
A quick before and after of my project.
These were the grommets I purchased. They come in different colors or finishes. For my laundry room, the color didn't matter, as they ended up being hidden underneath. However, if you use this idea for standard curtains, the grommets will be seen on the rod.
First, I planned out my curtain width and length. To hem the top & sides, I used a combination of iron-on tape and my sewing machine. Be sure to include a nice wide border at the top for the grommets!
The grommet kit comes with a measuring stencil and helpful instructions. Measuring and marking with a pen took the longest for me because I didn't want to make a mistake cutting holes.

How to best avoid making a mistake in your beautiful, expensive fabric? Measure twice, cut once! ;)
Each 2-piece grommet looks like this.
I did all my spacing, marking, cutting holes, and clicking grommets together on the ironing board.
This was the end result and it's a beautiful addition to my laundry room. Imagine how much storage space I have out-of-sight now!

One last caution to mention, don't hem the bottom of your curtain until AFTER you hang it in place. In other words, I hemmed the top and sides, inserted the grommets, and then hung the curtain to reveal what length was needed. The very last step was hemming the bottom to ensure a perfect fit. It's the little details that make DIY projects like this look professional!

I just don't understand why all the grommets are needed. Wouldn't a casing at the top with a spring rod thru it be just as effective?
