Kitchen reno idea...thoughts??

I SOO want to rip out my kitchen and had an idea after seeing IKEA freestanding kitchens. Old dressers? A few 9 drawer dressers painted against the walls or what ever configuration you could want. cut out for sink etc and bamm,a new kitchen?? Drawers could be ramps for tons of storage for everything.. not sure yet about attaching a counter top but any thoughts? Good bad or indifferent? I just need the old one GONE!

I this is what many old time kitchens were like.........hence the use of kitchen queens. By the way..........kitchen queens can often be purchased at thrift stores.....much cheaper and more useful than old cabinets. Can get plywood cut to fit from Lowes or Home Depot........or even counter tops from Craigs List

I would try to buy some used kitchen cabinets.people wanting new are ready to get rid of them.If you are willing to show up at someone's house with some tools,ie a drill,screwdrivers,rubber mallet,possibly a reciprocating saw and 1-2 helpers,you might be able to take them down yourself.I went looking on craigslist for a dishwasher for a needed dishwasher, and ended up purchasing almost the entire kitchen with appliances for less than 500.00. If used cabinets are not an option,multiple dressers might be interesting-To bring it all together,I would raise them all to the same height,then put a countertop on top.Open shelves would be another option on the walls.Could look very cool!

I used a "Fortress" tool cabinet with drawers for all kitchen tools/small appliances with the IKEA stand alone sink/cabinet

I think its a great idea - but dressers are often not high enough or too high for kitchen cabinets which are usually 35" before the countertop. Also dresser bottoms tend to be a weak point because they're not expecting the kind of heavy weight kitchen stuff becomes. You might have to reinforce the bottoms which shouldn't be too hard. You sound creative so I would say ... start looking for the right pieces, you may have to add some 'traditional' cabinets but you would be off to a running start. I'm in the midst of planning my new kitchen too - have already dismantled the cabinets to put into an apartment I'm building to rent out and will have just open shelves for a while. I'm hoping the shelves will help me know where stuff belongs in the kitchen so when I do build cabinets they will be the perfect size and place! Good luck.

This is in my not-too-distant future plans as well. I am planning to get cabinets from a Habitat ReStore. I know someone who is renovating an old house and got 15 Birch cabinets for $600. More than she needed but she said with a lack of closets in other rooms she was getting creative.

Sounds amazing! You can have plastic laminate tops made at a millwork shop in any configuration or shape you want for not much more than stock stuff at big box stores and laminate in soooo many patterns
