A Home That Makes Sense To YOU

Do you follow the rules?
I used to follow those rules of the home... the rules that state things like "decorative towels" (the embroidered ones you don't dare dry your hands on) are a must in the bathrooms of adults. The realization that this was a silly waste of space and absorbent material was one of many tipping points for me. I began to notice small tweaks that made a significant difference in the function of our home and our things.
I realized that a home should be about the people live in it.
We used to keep our little boy's coats and hats in the coat closet with our things. I grew a little tired of having to hang his things up every time he came inside, so I made him this...
It's a simple coat rack that he can easily reach on his own. Now he hangs his own things as soon as he comes in the door, no nagging from mom required!
A bucket for beanies, scarves, and gloves...
And a beautifully large and rustic wash tub for shoes were the perfect extensions of that concept. He knows right where things belong, and they make it there (almost) every time!
Our trash can sits underneath a rolling kitchen island, so I added two hooks to hang our dust pan and brush right above it. Messes are cleaned up right away because it's so convenient!
We used to keep our trash bags under the sink, but when the trash can moved, the liners followed. We keep them on the island as well, on the shelf right behind the trash can. When a full bag is removed, a new one is ready and waiting.

These little changes significantly changed how our home functions and help us breeze through our days. Could a simpler way of thinking help your home run more smoothly?
