I have a cream colored shade that has a few marks on it.
I was considering painting it black. Has anyone tried this and were the results ok?

@Joyce ahern I spray painted one once, and the light is blocked. Obviously it still comes out of the top and bottom, but it is no longer filtered through the sides. If the decreased light that won't bother you, then go for it!

I painted one a dark purple but also sprayed the inside a metallic gold to help reflect more light.

I spray painted 2 lamp shades with burnished gold paint and then modge podged the inside and sprinkled thickly with gold glitter sealed with a final coat of Modge Podge. It turned out great, the glitter reflects the light when on and isn't really noticible during the day. It brought elegant new life to a pair of classic lamps.

I painted one brown and had the same problem with the light...it is too dark for my taste so I wouldn't recommend it.

Might also want to try fabric spray paint. I used regular spray paint and yes it darkens the shade. But, I think I should have tried the fabric spray paint. They have it at hobby stores.
