Should I raise my existing cupboards to the ceiling?

I am using my existing cupboards in my kitchen do over. I want to raise them to the ceiling (or close to and use crown molding to finish). I hate the limited space the current height allows for small appliance usage. A person has to pull the appliance toward the front of the counter top to use it. This can be very inconvenient during tasks such as canning, filling the coffee maker with water etc. I already have to use a stool to retrieve items from the top shelf anyway so it will not create an additional inconvenience there, I am afraid it may look weird. Any thoughts?

No, it won't look weird. Personally, I prefer that look over the awkward empty space when there is a gap between cabinet tops and the ceiling. When we remodeled our kitchen a few years ago, I had the cabinet guy make my cabinets go all the way to the ceiling so I could have crown molding. One advantage I noticed after my kitchen was done, running the cabinets all the way to the ceiling made my 8 foot ceiling look much higher in person. Edited to add: my wall color is NOT really a putrid neon green like it appears in these photos!

I'm doing the same thing in my kitchen but I'm adding a shelf about 10 " below the bottom cabinet. It won't be as deep as the cab so won't be in the way. I think if you trim it out to the ceiling it would look great but you may want to add a shelf somewhere to tie to the counters. It seems to be a very popular thing to do now but I love old houses with cabinets to the ceiling. It's a great place to but that weird stuff you only need once a year.

I think that would be a good idea, as long as you can still reach the top cabinets.

That’s a great idea and it’s actually on my own agenda .... one day lol...

I love my cabinets that go to the ceiling. I need the extra space. Just remember, if you are using the same cabinets you already have, consider that you will have a bigger space between the top cabinet and your countertop. How far are you raising them?

Be careful that it doesn't look weird with your existing cabinets . Putting them to the ceiling in new construction would consist of putting in larger cabinets not taking short ones and moving them up. Perhaps you could just move them up several inches to give you the space you need. (BTW...I purchased a DeLonghi coffee pot because it filled from the front...love it)

@Patty Henry One trick I learned that is a huge help in keeping the tops of those cabinets clean...awesome...before they get dirty lay wax paper on the top...when you are ready to clean just zip up the dirty wax paper and reapply. Such a simple thing to do.

I'm very short so to me, that would be a terrible idea. If you are tall enough and aren't planning on selling anytime soon...go for it. Keep in mind that the shift while impact everything - light switches and outlets will suddenly be front and center, your range hood (if you have on) may look a little off and be prepared for wall prep where the cabinet was.
