How to get years of hardwater build up off of fiberglass shower?

I think I have tried everything under the sun, vinegar, Dawn, mix, scrubbing ect. and can't seem to get all the hard water off of the shower. Any help would be appreciated!

I had years of hard water on our glass shower door. The only thing that budged it was "Bar Keepers Friend." It still took scrubbing, but the glass door is clear. My next step was to do the fiberglass surround. After getting the crud off, a good coat of car wax will keep it off for a while.

Try the glass top cleaners they have for ovens, it cleans without etching into tile or fiberglass and it leaves a wax coating to prevent more buildup.

@Lori Hepp I tried it on my shower, and it didn't make any difference. I hope it works for you.

If you have years of build it , the glass will probably be etched. We clean rentals and what we use is the only way we can get some of them clean. We use The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner, we found a old sprayer and spray it on. You need to leave water running or it will etch the ring on the bottom. And turn on the bathroom fan, use plastic gloves. Let it sit and then rinse off. Repeat several times it will take it off. But if it isn't wiped down daily the build up will come back. Once the glass is etched the water, and soap builds up quickly. We clean several rentals a day we carry this stuff np by the case. It is a harsh way to do it, but it works.

@Lori Hepp I tried The Works TB Cleaner, too. It didn't work on my glass shower door. The one trick I heard on YouTube was if your glass squeaks after it has been cleaned but the door is still cloudy that it is permanently etched. At this point, the only thing to do is replace it. Luckily, mine did not squeak until all the crud was off of it.

It will work use a Mr Clean Sponge and it will look shiny prefect. I go into places that haven't had the sho era cleaned for years and I can get them clean. But this is a very harsh cleaning method!

oh and it isn't glass I'm trying to clean it is white fiberglass tub and surround. Is this still safe to use on it??
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Mar 24, 2015
Lori I believe less is more until you find out. Spray it on then wait a few minutes and hen wipe off. Remember leave water running in your shower so this doesn't discolor your drain. If the doesn't work leave it on longer I have left it on as long as a few hours. But when we clean apartments they are all basically the exact same so we are use to then and know exactly how they will react to the chemicals. But less at he beginning until you know how everything will react. We even spray this on some metals to get rid of hard water build up but everyone's showers aren't the same so always spot check.

once you get them clean use dryer sheets to keep clean, I use them about twice a week.

will do! Have you ever used car wax on a shower before? I have heard that if you use car wax after you get them clean you can clean them and only wax ever so often and then that helps keep the hard water off the shower!

@Lori Hepp I use car wax on my shower. It totally helps keeping the shower clean. I also use car wax on my gas stove. EASY cleanup.

  • Sherrie Sherrie on Mar 24, 2015
Yes on some fiberglass tubs you are suppose to use car wax and if this is fiberglass this is also how we get them clean. It should work. Let me know I am curious.

Try the mr clean magic eraser it is suppose to take care of anything I've heard I've never tried it but why not have a go with it can't hurt
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Mar 24, 2015
I would spray the heck out of it since it isn't glass and let it set. Then clean it off and yes on some tubs you are suppose to use car wax. I have read this several times about different fiber glass tubs. Leave water running in the bottom of it but don't wax it until you get it clean or you will seal it in. Let all of know what happens. Keep using the works until it becomes clean. I have no doubt it will. Don't buy the two pack it is weaker formula we buy the singles and use that stuff my the case. We do two to three rentals a day. Since they ask for a cleaning deposit people no longer ever leave them clean. Some are horrific anyone who has ever cleaned knows exactly what I mean.

I owned a house cleaning business myself years ago and I went through horrible things getting hard water/ rust calcium and even zinc off of tubs and showers and I have used "The Works" I also used CLR .. which is a waste of money it has never been successful, But very recently I moved into a fixer-upper doublewide and was faced with literally the filthiest shower I have ever seen in my life and I have seen hundreds of showers. I had one cleaning product on hand "Pine Sol" not generic Pine stuff but the real thing it was on sale 3 bottles for 5 dollars, and so on a whim I bout it, what a good buy. It ate through what looked like 20 years of filth, I mean filth. it carved through layers of calcium and lime and grime. I am not gonna lie it took me 2 days to clean the shower. I was patient and let the pine-sol work for me and was generous with it. The shower looks almost new, I am not kidding. I do have pictures of before and after. My brother saw the shower before I got to it and said sis it's gotta go there is no way that shower will ever look good again. he was truly shocked when he saw it. Sounds so simple but it worked for me and I was able to keep a shower stall out of a land fill which is nice after 3 dumpster bags were filled emptying out this fixer upper. ..

@Lee Cunningham Green ya, I have tried CLR myself and it didn't work for me either but I will keep the pine sol in mind. Thanks!

Wink, hard water and rust remover. Get the one that not in spray bottle, pour into glass bowl and apply with paint brush. Wear gloves and eye protection, it will burn you skin, but it works great.

Mix a paste of equal parts of baking soda and white toothpaste. Use a soft sponge to apply the paste to the hard water buildup and allow it to sit for about five minutes. With a clean sponge, sponge away the solution and rinse with clear water.

Hello Lori, hope this helps you out,

The crusty stains are alkaline, so to dissolve them, you apply an acid. Using vinegar mixed with hand dishwashing liquid was a smart approach, because vinegar is acidic and dish detergent is a surfactant — a cleaner that helps lift deposits and keeps them from reattaching to the surface.

For calcium crusty try this. Smear on a paste of baking soda and water, and cover that with a towel soaked in vinegar. Wait one hour, then rub with a cloth or sponge. Rinse. Wipe again with a clean microfiber cloth.

just be aware if the hard water has etched into the door there is no repair. But before anything clean the are well to see exactly what you have to work with.
