Fixing a bad paint job

I have a question for all my Hometalk friends...last fall we painted our bathroom. We used the same paint that was used the first time, it was just to freshen it up. There had been a border that we removed using Awesome to saturate. It came off without a problem. We then washed and rinsed the walls. But ever since we painted we have been getting streaks of what looks like crud. They are brown and gross and run down the walls. I am wondering if the paint was too old to use and if so will a new paint with primer cover this and stop the streaking? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what didi you use to clean the wall paper glue off the wall?? What did you wash and rinse the walls with? How old is the paint? I've always used TSP to clean walls before painting. You can't buy that anymore but there is something to replace it but I can't remember the name. A paint employee should be able to help. As far as the age of the paint - it should last five years or more if stored properly. There's a few things for you to check. Good luck.

They still carry TSP we buy it to clean furniture before we paint it.

It sounds like the paint was old and perhaps there was some rust from the paint can that got mixed in with the paint. When you mix the paint it may seem like it disappears but it will show up on your walls. Fresh paint/primer will cover it up. This happened to me too!

It is always best to buy new paint if your paint has been stored for some time.

There is a product called, zisser, is made to be more covering than regular primer. Over time glue from borders leach down walls and do what you mentioned, zisser camouflages it. Hope it helps.

Zinser is the brand name. And, either it or Gripper are sturdy, cover anything, primers. It sure sounds like glue residue to me. Prime and repaint. Sorry ;-(

It sounds like you have a ventilation problem. When your ventilation fan is not working properly or is not strong enough for the room you get condensation which will run down the walls. I would first look at that possibility and if that is not the problem I would lightly sand the walls, prime with zinzer or a stain blocking primer and then paint with a product that is specifically designed for kitchen/bath.

We have crud on our walls from condensation in both our kitchen and bath. It's a ventilation issue.

Start over , sand the wall, prime with either zisser or or an primer that has stain lock qualities. If it bleeds through then prime again . Paint your final with new paint. Check to make sure the ventilation in your bathroom is okay, If not install a better fan to remove moisture from the bathroom.

If she's going to sand she needs to make sure she doesn't cut thru the paint to the sheet rock paper or remove the texture from the walls. I don't think sanding is necessary or worth the risk to anone asking the question. A hardy primer is the way to go.

sand it down, start again with a primer and paint in one. maybe there was some sizing on the wall from the old paper. don't know what that stuff is made from but it is stays even when the paper has been removed

I am with Cindy and Nadine.....sounds like a ventilation problem...do you have an exhaust fan or window in your bathroom?

You said : "border removed using Awesome to saturate" Is Awesome a product? If so, could you please explain?
    • Kathy C Kathy C on Mar 24, 2015
@Sobe Yes, Awesome is a product found at the Family Dollar Stores around here. It works on everything...grease, glue, crayon, even blood. I use it for everything from my walls to my laundry as well as putting it in my Little Green Machine.

Lightly sand it and then put a coat of Killz...not sure if I am spelling that correctly...over it. Let it completely dry before you paint over it. I bought this in the paint department at Home Depot.

    Make sure it's not mold.

Awesome is a heavy duty cleaner found at the Dollar store. I've heard some use it with success to clean carpet stains and other things. I recommend a primer that says it will cover stains which zinzer and Kilz will do (read the label) and paint again.

Thank you everyone. Guess I have a bit of work ahead of me...and I just may pick a new color, lol. I knew I could count on all of you to help me solve my problem. You all Rock!

You can strain your paint through an old pair of pantyhose to remove the rust.
  • Betsy Betsy on Mar 25, 2015
Try throughly rubbing down your walls with denatured alcohol. This should help remove any traces of glue from the paper and/or anything left over from the Awesome or the combination of the two. After that I would make a decision about whether to prime or not before you paint.
  • Rita Revell Rita Revell on Mar 25, 2015
I would use a cleaner like TSP and the prime with Zisser. I found that this product covers a multitude of sins. The paint with the color paint you want. I live in a manufactured home, and some of my walls are those funky board covered with that vinyl "wallpaper". Zissers really helped the paint have something to hold onto. Good luck.
