Worn out wood floors - don't want to paint them

The finish is completely worn off our maple wood floors in some areas. Due to logistics, having them sanded and refinished is not an option right now. I don't want to paint them either.
Since the hand-scraped look is popular right now, why couldn't you actually hand scrape off the finish and use water borne polyurethane on them, a section of boards at a time?

Years ago, (seems a lifetime ago) when I was first married we moved into a military house. It was in terrible shape. One of the problems was floors like yours. We hadn't the resources to sand etc, so I went to the hardware store and bought clear varathane. (Note it isn't clear, so cover any baseboards.) and painted the clean floors with it. I believe I did two coats on every floor. The difference was unbelievable. The varathane caused a shining surface, and no one noticed the gross imperfections. I hope this helps you. God Bless

I use Murphy's Oil Soap on my old pumpkin pine floors, it smells great and cleans and shines in one step!

@Darla the suggestions above seem reasonable. You could also go to the paint department at home depot or lowes and ask for advise there as well. I seem to recall a post on here recently about a product that renewed the hardwood floors. You could use the search bar to look up hardwood floors.

I have seen "new" floors made out of pallets. Very interesting and "in". I have old engineered wood floors that have seen better days. There are wipe on stains for wood. I used a black stain for my oak "boards". Rough up each board, then wipe on stain, then finish with a protective poly . Sand & wipe emphasizing the individual boards. This can be done a small area at a time, so life doesn't have to be disrupted.Voila....a pallet floor without all the work.

If they are in real bad shape. You might rent sander they work great. I did my house and than turn out pretty good for the first time of doing it.

I was also going to suggest a sander. We did our own wood floors.

Quite awhile ago, I had that same dilemma in my dining room. I cleaned the floor and the used PolyShades-I think it's by Minwax-its polyurethane with a stain color mixed in- with a slightly darker stain color than what was already there. It (kind of) hid the color differences from where the floor was worn, but it gave the whole floor a nice shine again. It has lasted many years.

Google Mr Sandless in your area. Lots of the products mentioned keep us in business not saying which ones.
