I would try a liquid deglosser or liquid sand to help clean and get rid of some of the shiny finish.

I would just clean them thoroughly with a de-greasing product and some steel wool. Then prime with a good all-purpose primer/sealer like Kilz Cover-All. Then paint with two coats of latex (washable) paint.

Buy the Rustoleum Cabinet paint at the hardware store, they can tint it to any colour you want and there is no prep work, best of all no sanding, and no priming. I have used tis on my daughters 3 years ago and it looks the same as it did when I first put it on. I highly recommend this. Just use a good cleaner and wash them and let them dry before you begin. I have also use the hammered metal paint in my own kitchen held up until we decided to remodel. And the it was still in perfect shape. Good Luck

Your welcome, believe me our were ugly too. They turned into beautiful cabinets that looked like new. My daughters was done in a espresso she had some mouldings on hers and mine were flat cabinets so the hammered metal gave it a very modern look.

I would definitely opt for a chalk paint and either distress if you dig the "shabby chic" look or just paint and wax with a clear wax! No sanding or stripping needed at all. For cabinets I might do two coats of the wax. Super easy and so many options on color, finish, ect....hope this helps!!

Chalk paint works well too, I find it a tat harder to work with, these paints a formulated to skip the priming which is the worst part of painting!
