I know that you need to sink a tube of PVC down the center of whatever you choose to plant in for watering purposes. Drill the PVC with holes down the length so the water can reach the plants.

That sounds like a good way to start, but how close together should the holes be drilled? And what kind of planting medium would be best for this type of planter?

We use buckets and rain barrels. Just drill a hole every couple of inches apart..
