What to do?

I recently purchased the full sized head board and foot board with the side rails too. I am unsure of the type of wood it is. Maybe redwood? I can't seem to make up my mind as to whether I should restain or just paint over it. It is in just about mint condition with the exception of the scratch on the footboard. What are your thoughts?

Looks like a dark Maple wood. If you like a wood finish then stain it to the color you want. The scratch can be fixed with a wood crayon. Just depends on your taste as to whether you paint or stain.

I always hate to see beautiful wood painted. I know it is more work but I would agree with Barbara Thomas, fix the scratch with a wood crayon, stain if needed, & then a good coat of poly to give it a great shine.

Agree, I think its a dark Maple. Why not clean it real good, with maybe a soft sanding and re-stain with a poly finish. Scratch will work out with the wood crayon.

I love beautiful woods, but maple is not my favorite. Will you be using it for a bed or are you looking for a new use? Love what lynda posted! Use pinterest to help you decide what to do...

I am going to use as a bed. It sort of an odd color, that's why I was thinking of just painting over it. Thank You!

I vote Maple too. If you don't need it for a bed you could always turn it into a beautiful bench. That's what I'll be doing with my Eastlake bed.

Paint it with ASP Chalk paint.

Would love to get my hands on a find like this. My husband said he will make me a bench from an old headboard if I can find one for free!

@Kim Kilmer There is a site call freecycle , you can see if there is a local one for you. it's crazy some of the things you can find. You can check to see what people are offering or you can post something you want. I posted for some patio bricks (only needed a few) and got 5x what I really needed, but will find a use for.

freecycle isnt that popular here, but craigslist is with a free section. I check that site at least 2 times a day!

You could always restain a darker colour. Looks like it's in too good a shape to paint.
