Barn Wood Coat Rack and Shelf

My house is a little bit odd. There isn't any storage and the closets are all super small. The other thing thats weird is we don't use our front door. Our driveway is clear on the other side of our house. Out of convince we use the side entrance.
For the longest time I didn't really have a place to hang my bag or jacket. They ultimately would end up on the floor or thrown on the couch. I am so glad that I finally got this little side entry finished.
I have a love for old things. Mixing old with new is even better. This barn wood coat rack has been a great addition to our entry way!

I made this shelf out of barn wood that I got from my families farm. All of the barn wood was taken down piece by piece by my dad. He's pretty cool!!

I already had the hooks that I got on clearance at Joanns last year. I was saving them for the perfect project!

Here is the before picture. The area was really not even used.
For this project here is what you will need:

-2 pieces of barn wood

- 3 hooks

- nails and screws to make the shelf

- drill
This little shelf came together really fast and the end result is fabulous.
To see more about how to make one of these head on over to my blog!!

Lots of older homes Do not have hardly any closet space. I believe it was the German influence of that time. In Germany - I think you are taxed on how many rooms you have in the house. Closets would be considered a room.
    • @Lynne Hester You know, now that you said that I think I have heard that before... great!! Hopefully I can come up with some storage solutions even with the small closests.

I like your idea of shelf and hooks, but if you could have more wood from the old barn, why not make a hall tree, hooks for coats, jackets, hats and a bench for sitting on, then make an area either a slide out drawer or a rack for shoes and boots, under the bench. Add a framed mirror on the back too, us to check yourself before leaving the house? I like the basket, it would be great for umbrellas, etc. But I really do love the old wood.
