Combining furniture colors and periods

I have a hodgepodge of furniture in my living room and don't really want to buy new because we're planning to sell soon. Is it acceptable to combine espresso shelving with tan furniture? And what color should I paint walls to make it show well? Please help. I could upload pics if needed.

Go for it!! What would be the worst thing that would happen? Can you deal with that? If not the paint store is still open and selling paint.
