I love planters! Living in a hilly, sloping part of the state, planters are pretty much a must if you want to add color to your yard. I've been in love with the Versailles planter boxes for years, but for upwards of $500 - $600 each, they have been out of reach - until now. I created a quick and easy way to make one for around $25! If you went with a smaller planter, you could easily cut the price in half! That's a savings of $400 - $500! Even better, these are so easy to make, you can do it in a day. Note: More detailed instructions are on the blog.

The overall dimensions.
Lay out 5 - 22" cedar dog ear fence picket pieces side-by-side. Attach a 17.5" L - 1" x 3" furring strip piece to the top and bottom of the pickets using a brad nailer. Repeat this 3 times (creating four side panels in total).
Drill 2 pocket holes at the top and bottom of the first and fifth cedar picket piece on each panel. Select two panels and attach a 24" 1" x 2" furring strip on each side.
Attach the remaining two panels to the 24" - 1" x 2" furring strips.
After determining the depth you prefer, attach the 4 - 20.5" cedar dog ear fence picket pieces. Make sure you space them out so that drainage will be created.
Attach the X's. This one is pretty self explanatory. It was hard to get the diagram perfect but you can see in the actual picture of the planter where the 45 degree angles rest (basically in the upper and lower corners).
Staple weed liner on the inside of the planter and add lattice pieces to the edge. That's it! Just stain or paint as desired, add a water barrier/protectant and enjoy!

I had a problem attaching the two legless sides. I had to saw about about an inch off the ends of the top and bottom 17.5" x 1" x 3" furring strip pieces. Also, be sure to offset the pilot holes so they are not in conflict with the screws already set in the 2 pieces with the legs. The instructions are not in synch with the drawing but it's a fun project. Thanks for your efforts!
