Swan Road Designs on Apr 06, 2015The top tool is a seam creaser, which will allow one to smooth out seams, especially ones that are curved, and shape them uniformly. Think of a curved bone folder, which is used for creasing, scoring and folding, especially paper. The tool on the bottom is a seam gauge or hem gauge. You slide the red indicator to the measurement you wish for your seam or hem, then use it to fold or shape the remaining seam or hem of the item you are crafting so everything will be uniform and even. Both items can be used for either basic sewing or quilting.2 marked as helpful Reply

Wanda Arganbright on Apr 07, 2015She only put the hem gauge up with the other thing to show you the length of it. I know my granny did a lot of quilting and she had one of these things, but I never saw her use it. Sorry.Helpful Reply

Westacy2001 on Apr 07, 2015Its used as a "bone-shaper"I think..like a straight one would scrape down an even/straight piece of fabric to'shape' it..& this one would be used on odd shapes..it reminds me of a shaper ,I believe it is..?!Helpful Reply

Nan on Apr 07, 2015It is used to place a crease in dark fabric when other fabric markers are not possible to see. I use one to "crease/mark" a hem fold line. Go to Nancy's Notions. com. My spelling may be wrong, but I think they call it a herra marker.Helpful Reply

PLee on Apr 07, 2015Thank you all so much; yes, the hem gauge was to show size. I, too, wish I wasn't having to go through my Mom's possessions but I know she wanted as many things as possible to be needed and used and live on so I kinda have to know what they are. I'm sure I'll find other things as well. I found 3 of these in a box with an almost finished quilt. It's so beautiful I may have to try to finish it myself!Helpful Reply
