Hi!

My name is Mary and my mom left me a doublewide moble home, that need a few repairs, the home has 2 full baths, den, livingroom, 3bedrooms. It is a 1996 model and outdated so I want to upgrade it without spending my life savings, I want to start by remodeling the bathrooms, one has a skylight over the tub that has a leak and has ruined the ceiling in that area, I tried sealing it and also had someone repair the roof where it is, and it still leaks, any suggestions? Also the entire bathroom need to be remodeled. The Masterbath room has the outdated wall paper, the shower is small, and the round tub is taking up to much space also the his and her sinks is old and need to be replaced I want to change the entire look...I also want to change the doors through out the entire home with white doors and the baseboards and ceiling trim are the brown cheap strips that looks really bad I want to replace them all, my mom has air conditioners in the window, the home came with a unit the cools the entire home, something about the piping that cause certain areas in the home to heat up or cool down, also the wall outlets, because how cheap this home was put together they are hanging out of the wall, How or what you sugggest about the repacement of those? i ....I really need serious help with these projects! ...»

Tired of getting side people to do the work, although it is cheaper, but I need someone that really know what they are doing with good quality work that has a quarantee, and look just like I want...Please Help I'm moving back home to take care of what my mother left me, but on a budget, these things needs to be done, so I can live comfortable.

Hi Mary, I have re-worked so many of these type of trailers and mobile homes that I can't count! The foremost thing to remember is, "Don't Put $5,000 worth of wheels on a $500 car!" There are many DIY projects you can tackle if you're the "Handy" type. One thing you may not want to skimp on is the Roof leak. You didn't mention whether it's a shingled roof with a pitch or a rubberized roof with a membrane. I'll guess that there are shingles and your choices are only 2...remove and replace ...»
with another skylight or remove, plywood and shingle over the hole. Ideally, you could lathe strip over the shingles and put a metal roof right over the existing shingles and then you're ready to undertake the inside projects one by one as KMS suggests and you're work will stay dry and secured... Another point being that mobile homes of that time were most always constructed with kiln dried pine 2 X 3's not 2 X 4s. The older studs are just like sponge strips by now. Any bit of moisture is sucked right up by them and will weaken and rot quicker than the newer products. Most doors are thinner, the floors are usually particle board that disintegrate when exposed to water and the windows almost always leak after time. Plumbing water lines are most likely the grey flex line and require special banding tools to connect and lots of times the traps under the showers, tubs and sinks are thin black PVC and will crack if josstled or slightly overtightened. The wiring and subsequent outlet boxes are ofttimes secured by a single side screw or an old construction swivel out type fastener that just come loose from their 3/8" vinyl covered gypsum board ( nowadays most all MH have at least 1/2" sheetrock )

TRUTHFULLY, IF YOU ARE THE HANDY ONE...YOU CAN DO THE WORK! A helper is always useful but many things like clean, priming and painting over outdated wall coverings and trim mouldings can be done a room at a time.Bathroom change outs are a pretty detailed experience but most all components (toilets, shower surrounds and vanities) are universal in sizes and can be exchanged from new house work to mobile without much ado (NO STEEL TUBS!) This has been one of my longer comments but the intention is to simply let you know there are affordable ways to accomplish your goals...keep an eye on sites like CraigsList.org and FreeCycle.com to catch "building materials for sale" "Curb Alerts" and don't be afraid to put your story out there in the "Items Wanted" section...Freecycle allows you to put "dingers" on specific items you're looking for and you'll be notified when someone offers it...beat feet and you can get some good stuff for free. Used toilets, tubs, curtains, sinks and the like can sparle anew with the right cleaner and "elbow grease" ( no out of pocket expense there!) >WOW< Like Urkle sez "Did I DOO that?! On and On but with good intentions, hope this helps Neighbor! Best wishes and post all the questions you can think of...I just got here early! JL
