My husband has his own business with water proofing, when we did our counter tops we made our own using concrete with bits of glass etc in it, then ground them to a high polish once they had set. Before polishing, however, we treated them with a product called Aquron 2000. This is environmentally friendly and the catylist is the lime in the concrete. once it is hit with water it turns all the perosity into a gel that stops water (any fluid) migration into the concrete so that it beads on top.The grinding is a diamond ground system usually used on showroom floors that will bring it up like polished marble. Sealers will turn yellow with the sun and after time will chip and have to be stripped and redone every two to three years. We did ours nearly 15 years ago and all I have had to do is put a lambs wool buffer pad over it just like polishing a car only without all the strange angles! The Aquron 2000 will also densify it, giving it extra strength. Ensure that there are no pin holes when your polisher is finished. If you do it yourself it will be up to 7000 grit diamond paper that you will use to give the high polish for counter tops. Good luck and happy polishing - it is a long process but well worth the effort. Google Aquron 2000, as it comes from the US I had to check what it was marketed as over there so that I got the right name for the right country.
