Has anyone had any luck staining terra cotta pots?

I want to stain dark brown. I do not want to paint. I need them for centerpieces at my son's rehearsal dinner next month.

Minwax has a poly & stain in one. They usually have a blue silver label. These are great for terra pots. I did a bunch this past fall to use in my kitchen. There's a wide variety of colors and you can get them in Wal-Mart too. I use a cloth sponge to apply (with gloves) and did 2-3 coats depending on how dark you want them to be. They came out beautiful. Good luck!

Walnut juice or coffee, but for permanency, a spirit based stain of the sort used to stain wood.

thinned down craft paint in a brown will stain nicely, and cleans up with soap and water. Thin the pain enough that you use a sponge and go one way, one swipe stroke.
