Need kitchen wall decor advice!

Mary
by Mary
I am replacing the metal round piece with the above canvas art. I need suggestions on what I could replace the two plates with. I thought about maybe a mirror but it is kind of a tight space and would hate for it to possibly get knocked off the wall and break into a million pieces. I am not going for a wine theme I just liked the colors. The wall next to the blinds is small so I am not going to put anything there. I appreciate any suggestions!

You might consider something like Wall Words rub on quotes or stencil your own quote, prayer, favorite words from a song or poem, monogram etc. This way it's not something that sticks out from the wall in a tight area, yet has visual Impact making the space look larger.

A large mirror would open the whole room up it would look great try it

I agree, a large (round) decorative mirror would reflect daylight when the blinds are open and brighten the space in general. Also, I would change centerpiece to a solid colored glass vase/bottle candle holder or grouping of 1-3 pieces/shapes/colors. I would use the painting's colors as a guide for changing placemat and chair cushion colors as well.
  • I agree with Susan on each point plus I would take down the the two rounds.

I'd use a large rectangular mirror (landscape, not portrait). Too much round going on.

YAY! So glad to see you decided on this print you initially thought might be too large (from an earlier post)! Have you hung it up yet? Personally, I would hang it first and then decide what (if anything) you want on the other wall. I'm thinking, because it's large, maybe you should let the canvas print take front and center stage and not put anything on the other wall to compete with it, other than a pretty wall color, maybe a green or blue pulled from the artwork. (Every blank wall does not always have to be filled.) If you want a mirror, I would look for something round and with a low/flat profile. I just did an extensive (on-line) mirror search a few weeks ago for my own house and there are lots of flat or frameless options available that won't stick out from the wall but brace yourself...I was shocked to see how expensive large mirrors are.

I agree with no more round - table, chairs, etc... Maybe you could put a narrow depth table on that back wall as a buffet, with a large rectangular mirror (landscape orientation), and put that pretty picture on the wall instead of the plates.

Hi! I actually like the idea of taking that medallion, painting it one of the colors in the wine bottle print and then grouping it with the other two platters, which I would also spruce up with some dry brushing or something in their centers that would also pick up the wine bottle colors. The eye likes things in threes. Then, I would use that same color in your chair pads and runner or placemats to really enhance the colors in the print.

There's some great ideas here! If you hang the picture on the back wall, try having a coordinating table runner and lay it lengthwise (perpendicular) to the picture wall so it will draw the eye outward and give the room length. Will also add color to the space.

Definitely a mirror would add "space" to the room from the reflection. I would go with a large square mirror with a white frame.

Yep, the round stuff...the beautiful metal round décor on the facing wall is taking my eyeball IN. in a space that small, I think we want to stretch the wall OUT and give the illusion of more space...a mirror does that wonderfully...or a metal wall hanging that extends HORIZONTALLY. I have one with birds on a wire that moves the eye horizontally yet keeps 3-D on the wall.

Sometimes you have to do the space by elimination. Can the wall landline phone go? Love the colors on the bottles. What ifs are fun....what if the table and chairs were black? What would a mirror on the wall facing the camera show...the kitchen? Love your fresh white trim. You might want to capitalize on it with a centerpiece incorporating artificial white flowers (tiny) that again move OUTWARD. Oh yes, rectangular mirror moving eye outward and horizontally again...it's objective would be to provide illusion of space so maybe no frame or try the white frame, or even a black one...get a feel for all 3 and see.

Once the mirror is in place, the black or dark round décor on left wall could be used vertically on the small wall by blinds. I love that medallion but it just keeps taking my eye in a swirl inward and outward is where this rm needs to go.

The vase is beautiful...a place where the tiny spreading artificial flowers could go taking the eye up and OUT again! Your flooring is lovely! You're almost there. Keep us posted!

How about some long opaque Sheer or printed Panels just hung in the back Corners.. need something to soften up the Area...or some Corner floor to ceiling shelf/cupboards units on each side that could be used for Storage with the rectangle Table in between them..?maybe soften up the Table by taking the Candle Vase off and adding a Real Plant or Clear vase with Flowers..? Change out the place mats and seat pads for one of the Colors in the painting and add some Cloth napkins to match...?

I like the plates with the print, but would think that a really big mirror would be nice. Something reflective, because you have a nice light, nice paint.

Mirror, or mirrors, also using horizon lines in the paint, wall decor, or what ever you choose would help visually.

I really think you should try making a collage of like items on the back wall, and remove what's on the left and right. Or look for different sizes of mirrors with or without frames, put them together on the back wall in a nice way. Look for mirrors of different shapes and place them close together or move them around to see which application looks best. I also would paint the walls a soft color that matches the kitchen. Then I think I would look at thrift stores or lamp stores and find a chandelier you really like, maybe some crystals on it! Then use different hues of color watered down to dip the crystals in and let the color drip off, just leaving a bit of color on them. When the light is on it will show in the reflection in the mirrors! Thanks for sharing and allowing us to share with you!

your chairs are set at 3,6,9 & 12 o'clock. try shifting them to 2,4,8 & 10 o'clock. less chance of bumping walls when getting up & sitting down.
