I am planning on remodeling my kitchen mainly just replacing the existing cabinets, countertops and flooring. I came up with the design and have a general idea of the tiles, cabinets and countertop I want to use. I have gotten 2 quotes for doing the work and they are different by 25%..what gives? Why such a big difference? What am I suppose to do? is the lower one good? Bad? Please help.

Is there any way you could see examples of both company's work and, as additional information to help you make a wise decision, get some names and phone numbers of people of whom they've worked? Twenty-five percent seems like a bit of a spread so you are smart to question it and do some digging. You are probably going to spend a significant amount of money anyway and more than likely plan to live with the finished product for a long time. From your photo, I have a feeling your kitchen area is an active place that you and your family and friends spend a lot of time enjoying. You should get the best and most acceptable job for your expenditure.

I believe you could use industrial open shelving because you have the stainless steel gas cook top and the back splash has grey tones, either painting or grey stain. That's my suggestion, wanting to change up lightening the dark kitchen. Have fun.

I would ask for more detail, and as Swan Road Designs indicated, ask around about each would-be vendor. You might try Angie's List. I found them to be helpful many years ago when I was faced with a similar decision.
  • I got burned bad once with a low offer. Really burned. The guy came with great recommendations from a co-worker and he gave me several honest reviewers. They told me what was great and what to stay on top of him for. In the end we lost over 10K in payment to him, had to pay an additional 5 K in tile work and purchase a hot water heater. In the end to me if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I'm with @Swan Road Designs If you can see examples of both company's work and can get multiple recommendations from both providers previous clients, that could help you to get a good idea of what you are dealing with.

I'm with RCooper and Mike. Make a side by side comparison of each estimate. Sometimes it's just more of who you trust the most. But one thing I will mention, is your existing cabinets and counters look really good in the pics. Are you donating to habitat or selling them? Please don't let one of the companies take them out and sell them without your knowledge. Take that job on yourself to be sure they go where YOU want them to go.

@Daniel Mark you might want to get more then two estimates, I have been told that it is always best to get more the two estimates before choosing a contractor. As @Mike_mckelley and @Swan Road Designs stated above, some very sound advice. Sometimes it takes a lot of work on your part to find the right contractor and or designer.

Get at least one more bid. I completely re-did my kitchen with granite and slate floors but I had my light oak cabinets stripped, had them stained dark, added crown molding, new hinges and new hardware and they are beautiful. Everyone thinks I got new cabinets. It was a fraction of the price of new!

I'm a contractor, I would ask to see their work for reference, sometimes cheaper isn't always better, but also you may want to make sure you described the same specifications to them both that you didn't tell another one something extra.

Good advice above. If I had this kitchen, I'd think I'd died and gone to heaven! LOL
