Outdoor decorating and fun things...

This was an old hog house that had been down in our woods for over 30 years. The rest of the building was completely deteriorated but the front was still good so I had the boys cut the front off with a chainsaw and move it to my shade garden.

  • Patriotic perfection - Rusty metal stove doors! 1

Repurposing & Upcycling: Cast iron stove doors - what to do with these lovelies?

We had an old cast iron wood stove in our garage, but never used it because the bottom was rusted out, so hubby took the pieces to the scrapyard. However, I kept these fabulous doors and feet! I thought about creating recycled wood frames and hanging the doors up as wall art, but I wanted to see if any other creative folks out there could help me think of other options? As for the feet, I may use them under a large potted plant, but I am open to suggestions about those too. I can't wait to see what great ideas pop up!

  • Some of the details include copper sinks and taps, granite countertops with a 'leather' finish and natural tin ceiling. Also, no upper cabinets, backsplash is 'v' groove paneling and countertops are 30" deep on this wall. 12

  • Trunk repurposed into shelf, with some favorite antique items - Palmolive jar, enameled finger bowl and Italian vase.

Repurposed old trunk

This trunk was given to my dad by his landlady when he was in college (very early 1960's), it is very old, although neither he or I know much about it. The beautiful blackletter text on ...»
it says, "Frank Johann Aus Sinsheim", which translates to "Frank Johann of Sinsheim" [a town in Germany].

Anyway, dad has had the trunk in his backyard for at least 10 years, exposed to weather - rain, snow, heat, drought - you name it. He has known that I have always wanted it, yet I never seemed to be able to have the time or room in my car to take it... until it literally fell apart and collapsed into a lovely weathered heap of boards in his yard. At last, it fit into my car! In its dilapidated state, it was no longer a trunk, but POTENTIAL! So I did the next logical thing - I cut it up and made a shelf. Here is the fruit of my efforts... with the original iron handles and charming old text.

Gardening: With the recent rains, I've seen a good many mushrooms. These appear in the morning and disappear later in the day. What

are they? I assume they're harmless?

them up, they are Parasola Plicatilis, and here is a link! They disappear after a couple of hours, but such a fitting name since they DO look like little parasol umbrellas!
