Thanks for the comments! When they were planted, I was told to water each plant one minute 3x ...»

Outdoor Living: I've had installed a "marble mosaic" covering on a cement slab (3' x 5') at the bottom of steps leading from a sunroom

to the yard. The pieces of marble are approx. 5" x 4". Should I seal this covering? How can I prevent it being slippery when wet? Any maintenance ideas?

When it comes to marble, you can get experts saying "seal" and some saying "don't seal. ...»
Marble is a natural stone. Though polished, it's still porous.

If you're mostly concerned about having a non-slipping effect when wet... then don't seal it. Any kind of mild cleaner will eat away the sealer anyway and will eventually "etch" the marble.

Actually, it's the mild acids that do that, but acids are in almost every cleaning product and also occurs naturally so just walking from outside to inside will eventually make your marble mosaic... non-slip.

Gardening: I am having several kinds of invasive vines removed from my back yard, and the ground will soon be bare.

What type of mulch should I put down to prevent erosion until I decide on a landscaping strategy?

If the slope is very steep you should consider an erosion mat. This is a grass woven mat that ...»
can have seed planted under it or through it after it is put down. I have used it before and it is better than mulch because it can't move and unless you get a monsoon type of rain it stabilizes the soil. That is the same sort of mat that the DOT uses when they do road construction and they don't have a ground cover down yet.

Painting: The wallboard in my stairwell is bowing outward and has developed a horizontal crack (not along tape line).

(My house is 24 yrs old.) Where should I begin in finding the problem and the solution?!

samples of what happens not only if you build incorrectly but it shows how in this case the outside bows out due to the settlement of the structure.

The same thing can happen inside a wall like a staircase that is next to this area.

This was an addition in which another contractor installed TGI joists without properly running a engineered band joist or adding any supports to prevent sagging of the floor. Those of you that are in the business will get a kick out of just how bad they constructed this building.

You will also see some of the repairs that we did to help stop the settlement. We could not jack the addition up, but at least we stopped if from getting any worse.

    • This is a repaired section before we installed new sheetrock and wrap
    • Notice how they did not even set the plates on the lower framing.
    • You can see the settlement of the upper plate here. What ou cannot see is the bow on the joists
    • Still another lovely framing job. It amazes me that the place did not fall down.
    • You can see just how bad the plywood sheating has pushed out.
    • Another photo of the repairs before plywood and wrap.
