Sorry J, KMS got my funny bone, I've been fighting these things for a couple of years. They have figured out the traps, laugh at the dogs, and taunt me every time I go outside. They avoid the poison, and one of my dogs has tunneled to China trying to get to them..... I give....white flag.....don't know....
Remove the food, remove the habitat, you remove the rodent. Chipmunks are no different then mice or rats.
They feed on nuts and berries found around the home. Keeping your yard clear of them by limiting the amount of that on the ground will keep them at bay.
Also these critters like to hide and nest in areas of piles of rocks, wood, pipes etc. They

also tend to nest under sheds and storage items. Keeping this type of nesting at a minimum will lower the chance that they will stay around.
You can purchase small animal traps even rent them to trap them and relocate to far away lands. Much like a squirrel they tend to find their way back, so be sure to relocate them several blocks away.
I do not suggest poison as many other critters can get into that and that is not good.
They will not simply go away right away, but as you trim back shrubs that protect them, remove stored items on property that they can nest in, and make an attempt to remove food sources that fee them. They will find another homeowner to bother.
With about 200 pine trees in my yard...most of them bearing fruit ...removing the food source is not an option for me...I'd rather not turn my yard into a Weyerhaeuser clear cut. I let them have the "outside" and I keep the inside...we try our best to seal out all kinds of furry critters.
If my daughters found out you were going to kill chipmunks they would picket your yard...last year I had to "live trap" the mice that came in from our crawl space...we did a catch and release about 1/2 mile away...once I go the hole sealed up we have been mouse free for over a year now I guess the only real difference from a rat and a chipmunk is the fancy pin stripes and the furry tail...each to their own
LOL, KMS!!! We live trapped mice in a cooperative house I lived in when I was single. It was the most inefficient way of trapping mice I have ever seen, but no one would kill a mouse over there (um, except me).
